For some reason the name of this forum makes me think of Terry Pratchett, the author of the Discworld series. (I'm reminded of Vimes talking about the "burnt, crunchy bits".) Anyone else here a fan? He's an absolute stud in my opinion... wicked writing skills and a mustache that puts an archetypal French villain to shame.

I've had Color of Magic sitting in my Amazon wish list for about 1.5 years. I heard the first one isn't as good as the rest so I've been kind of hesitant to start the series.

There's like 40 books in the series -- don't let the first one scare you. Take my word that it's sick... the best and funniest fiction you'll read. Some of the books in the series are mostly independent of the series. If you don't want to jump into it on a bad note, read "Thief of Time" first; it hinges on nothing and leads into nothing and it's fantastic so long as you like what Pratchett is throwing down. And you most certainly will.

I've read one of his books, I believe it was 'The Color of Magic'. Absolutely loved it, it was hilarious. I've never laughed that hard from reading.
Terry Pratchett is my favourite writer in the field of fiction. You don't actually have to read the books in any order, but it's not bad if you do. While the books have a time line of a sort, they're all invidual stories.

This is possibly the last thing I was expecting to see here. Yes, Colour of Magic is not as good as some of the later books, but they are pretty much all at worst a bit of fun, and at best absolutely inspired and hilarious.
The poor guy has Alzheimers, which is such a shame.

Excellent books. Really sorry to hear about the Alzheimer's.
Another good one that he co-wrote is Good Omens.

Mort is probably one of the best and a great one to start off with.

I read a discworld book when I was about 9. Got all the way to the end but thought it was rather shit. Perhaps it went over my head.

How can anybody not like Sergeant Colon and Nobby? and Bloody Stupid Johnson and Cut Me Own Throat Dibbler?

I like the Night's Watch books more than the Unseen University.

I can agree with that, however Hogfather is probably my favorite (of those I've read), kind of dark. Monstrous Regiment as well is excellent.

I love his books. I like some of his later "darker" books like nightwatch and monstrous regiment the most, although his send up of Australia (forgot the title) is funny as.

I have read all his books, many of them multiple times. He is probably my all-time favourite author, at least the only one I buy everything by immediately when it appears on the shelves.
Pratchett is an amazing author, one who is incredibly erudite but wears his learning lightly and with great humour. This thread has inspired me to re-read the whole series, as soon as I get done with all the George Pelecanos books that have just arrived from Amazon.

I've never got into the Watch books, and Rincewald can get tiresome. But some of the Witches books are hilarious as are the Death books.
Also his more stand alone ones are great too. He truly is a fantastic author.
