I read that Bill Starr used a split when snatching, is this true?

Do any lifters still do this, and does anybody have a video as Im finding it hard to picture. Ive found a few videos of noobs playing around with it. But im interested in seeing what it would look like as a competition lift.

An extra oldschool lifting question as a bonus:

What the hell is happening in this picture:

I don't know of any videos of split snatches, but there are some video floating around of split cleans. Watch one of those and then imagine that, instead of clean, the movement gets finished with a snatch.

This is a classic picture:

A deep split like that is hard. A higher split-- one like you'd see in a standard split jerk -- can be learned in one session.

do split-snatchers alternate which leg goes forward? if not, is there any muscle imbalance things that come up with constantly training the same foot forward?

Well, I imagine there would have to be and that it would be a benefit if you were at a competition -- the fabled Split Snatch Invitational/Marina and Boat Show of 1953 comes to mind. But I bet if you were doing it for sports performance you'd alternate.

In the beginning of this video, they show Josh Everett doing split snatches. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWNoy3RLmEY

Ignore the banter.

Most people are dominant enough with one side that alternating on the lift itself is not viable. But even for ambi types, it can lead to catastrophic failure when your brain doesn't get the decision made early enough.

As for "imbalances" consider that your squat is much higher than your split lifts so these things are generally not problems. Extra work can be put in, but typically would not be done by practising the lift, but instead through assistance work.

If you're interested, look at Sup's interview (http://70sbig.com/?p=1072) when it is released. I'm quite sure that coaching the split lifts was discussed and prolly training related to this style as well.

Hey, man. That's the second fittest man on the planet.

Anyway, the split snatches in the intro were good.
