So I came into the office last week and I noticed one of the other graduate students has decided to swap out her chair for a big giant swiss ball. I asked her why she did that, and she proceeded to lecture me on how it benefits your core while you sit down.
What the fuck? Has anyone else seen this nonsense? Sounds to me like another example of how Americans want a shortcut for fitness, kinda like those lame shoes that "shape your ass" while you walk. People need to grow a pair and get under a godamn barbell.

=/ purty silly I suppose.
Don't rip me to shreds, but I actually have a Swiss ball that I bought to use as a part-time chair substitute -- not, however, with the illusion that it would magically strengthen my "core."
The nice thing about sitting on the balance ball while I'm working on the computer -- especially if what I'm working on is verrrry dry, which is often -- is that I can fidget & roll around a little, without distracting myself from my work. And since I often fidget, and I spend a lot of hours in front of the computer for work, the ball can be an outlet for that. Also, I sit up straighter when I'm perched on that thing; when I'm in my chair, I usually slouch.
It's not very comfortable, though, so I don't use it for long.
Actually, I use it mostly when I get up for something and come back to find that the cat has taken over my chair, and she looks so comfy and adorable that I don't have the heart to make her move. (Well, not right away, anyway.) Yeah, she's spoiled. :)

She lectured you? Yeah, cause when you can squat 406lbs your core needs strengthening...

That chair looks like it's been designed for "her" pleasure.

I think it's a posture thing...

FWIW, I have sometimes used them as a seat, and they're not bad to sit on, as mentioned, they do help prevent slouching. I spend a lot of time sitting on my arse in front of a computer, and just moving on the thing is pretty nice compared to most office chairs. I'll live with the 'dork' comments.
