See, Rip, not all is gone to Hell in the UK. Hell, even a lawyer figured it out.

Too bad it's only the Daily Mail.

****

The rest of you, get busy telling him how single-malt scotch flows from the taps, things like that. Getting him here isn't going to be easy.

Yep, I'd be interested in attending a SSS in the UK, (better if it's London, as I will save on hotel costs as well).

Other brits chime in..

See, Tigger, that's the problem. London is damn near the most expensive city in the world. The best bet is up north, where there are still black iron lifters, say near Newcastle. Much less expensive, still very convenient to Europe via Ryan Air and Easyjet for non-UK types, and very accessible vats of scotch lie nearby. He brings a team of people, has to house and feed them, and needs a gym with a lot of bars and racks. London? No chance.

Yeah, but LondonTiger could take Rip out to the clubs to pick up the hotties with his new found squat ass! :D

re: the squat ass... all will be revealed soon..

tbh I dont mind which town it is, a £50 train ride up north is all well.. Beats going to the states with all the expenses involved.

How about we all start saving up the money from now to get Rip over to Europe mid-September. I'd say good dates would be the 14th, 15th and 16th of September. A good location would be Munich. That way, as soon as we are finished, we will be ready for the Oktoberfest which starts on the 17th!!!

Three days of training followed by at least a full weekend of German beer, German sausages, and German serving wenches (I will only be looking at the wenches of course, being married and all...)

And Rip could show LondonTiger how to do rack pulls.

there is a crossfit facility in london I think. plus at least one proper powerlifting gym.

There is obviously even more powerlifting stuff further north (like andy boltons gym)

But I doubt many of these powerlifters would actually have that much respect for someone like Rip and the kind of mixed people (not powerlifters, weak kids & women) that attend SS seminars.

there is a training centre for the athletics team in my city (olympic track people) it has a gym with 3 power racks and some platforms.

It is not open to the public, but I reckon the people managing somewhere like that would have the right attitude. I could go talk to them.

There may be other athletics venues, manchester velodrome is a good example. With sports orientated barbell training facilities. I think these kind of places would be most suitable.

Birmingham is a lot cheaper than london but still, there is not much interesting here.

Others may disagree, but I think the best beer (generally speaking) is found in England. Also, if you're in London and you can't find a variety of really good food in plentiful supply, by just walking around town, then there's probably something seriously wrong with you.

This is a not for profit powerlifting gym in LOndon, it's patially funded by lottery money.

Cool beans

This would be a great venue IMO

Btw Dastardly, british barbell have saturday mornings for novices, i.e. weak kids and women, like in every scene some experienced people are elitist some aren't and are welcoming of novices.. either way who cares what others think.

Where do you get the idea that Rip isn't respected in the powerlifting circuit? I've only heard praise for his books from the powerlifters I know.

Well, my genius idea of doing the SSS in Munich just before the Oktoberfest aside, if we were going to do an SSS somewhere based only on beer, I'd vote for Brussels. That way Rip could also see the seat of power of his favourite institution, the EU.

But in all seriousness, the UK is probably best, as judging from this board it has the highest number of people who would attend. Genesis Gym, where Andy Bolton has trained, and which is owned by David Beattie, is near London.

Out of interest, has there been a SSS this side of the pond before?

Rorshach, to the best of my knowledge, no. Crossfit has done them here, and is in fact doing one near me in the UK in just a few weeks. I'm going to be lazy and not look, but I think Stef posted a list of requirements in terms of space and equipment over in the seminars section. Remember that Rip's folks have to get passports if they don't have them already, have to fly over, have rooms to sleep in, have to eat, have to drive (well, maybe not if the hotel works out or the local transit is good, as it is in London), and have a facility large enough to train enough people to pay for all the earlier items, but at a certain point too many trainees means time under the bar drops. They know these magic numbers. I tell them to just charge their dollar prices in pounds (instead of $900, 900GBP, sucks to use Euro), automatic two/thirds increase in revenues (but is that enough to offset costs?).

So yeah, any SSS on this side of the pond is a challenge to Rip. That's why I try to offer perks, like easy access to Scotch. London's a great city, just expensive. Prague is very central and perhaps best-priced, or Budapest and get some of that old Warsaw Pact iron. Wherever it is, one of us is going to have to do 90% of the work locating and arranging the training facilities.

For you USAREUR/USAFE types, there has to be enough cages, weights and bars in DRMOs throughout southern Germany to put together a complete black-iron gym. If any of you are reading, pipe up.
