I hint elements of racism here.

I think the woman was right to want to change her lifestyle rather than just diet, and the surgeon was being unhelpful and insulting.

Fat people suffer a lot of stigma.

That's interesting. What about his behavior seemed racist to you? It seems to me that he just likes to swear to get people's attention.

Because in new zealand & australia people have a habit of being racist to the natives.

And it is the Daily Mail.

Yeah, I don't know where racism could be divined from this article unless you think fat people are a race.

And I think the article is badly misrepresenting the surgeon's decision to remove the patient from they bypass waitlist. In the US at least, most patients have to drop a certain amount of weight on their own before they can be candidates for things like gastric bypass. There's a subtext here that isn't made explicit: the lady had already been placed on the list so she must have consulted a surgeon beforehand. Most likely it was this guy, since he said they 'no longer had a "therapeutic relationship."' Calling it punishment is pretty questionable in terms of journalistic integrity.

I read that as: he told her she needed to lose weight prior to surgery, she didn't do it, he said she needed to go on a diet, she pitched a shit fit over word choice, and he realized there were other people who deserved some help but weren't getting it cause this lady was in his office instead of one of them.

IMO, if you're so averse to the very word diet that it might actually submarine your progress in dropping weight to avoid morbid obesity, you need a psychiatrist as well as a surgeon because you probably had some really shitty experiences growing up overweight and have developed a pathological response to the term diet. Being a pottymouth to someone who's likely to die early from being fat isn't the worst sin I can imagine.

I think it's ridiculous that your doctor can't tell you that you are a fat, self indulgent suicidal smoker and that you should stop wasting his time.

A little honesty might actually help some of these idiots.

And where did you read that?

Yeah, and the world would be a much more honest place if people stopped resorting to strawman claims.

As Dastardly mentioned, it is the Daily Mail, and there's some sense of unreality to the story. In other words, it's probably not totally reliable.
