I've read the recommendation on milk. After many years of not being able to drink it, I can again. For an old, overweight guy just starting, does it matter if the milk is whole or 2%? I'd like to lose a little weight as I start moving them around.

Thanks!

When you say you've read the recommendation on milk, do you mean GOMAD? An older, overweight guy should not be drinking a gallon of milk a day.

Sorry, no. Not read up on GOMAD yet, just "drink milk as a part of the program". Is there an article I can read somewhere that would be more appropriate for the hefty and geezerish? ;)

Thanks!

Leam, I haven't an article to recommend, but I have been doing all of my milk on 1%. I am not doing GOMAD, but am after the easy source of protein. I also use it as a base for protein shakes. I am still getting pretty big and pretty strong. I wouldn't let the hardcore milk contingent scare you too much. Also, as I recall, Rip said a while back that heavier trainees tended to gain strength faster than skinny ones, I believe as a result of the excess fat on board as an available source of energy. However, I'm not the most up to speed on metabolic matters, so I'd take that with a grain of salt. You might try posting this on John Sheaffer's forum in the Guest Coaches section, as he seems to have the nutrition smarts.

Good luck, and happy suffering.

I'm 43 and I did a 1/2 gallon of whole milk per day from November to March and went from 163 or so to 200-205#. Not optimal, but it was a gain rate I could live with and it supported my lifts throughout that time period as well. I'm now doing 2%, at about a quart or so per day, sometimes more if I need a pick-up, with extra protein. Overall, this worked very well for me.

Horses for courses. For me (200lbs at 6ft4, so not underweight, but aiming for another 20lbs) the fat's the important part of milk, so I drink full fat.
If you're on a calorie-controlled diet, then semi-skimmed etc can be an option.

Thanks! Right now I'm looking at 2% milk with protien the morning of and the morning after working out, and then just 2% milk on the other days. Only on a 2x week workout schedule until the days settle a bit.

I see what you're getting at but maybe a more substantive contribution would clarify your point and help other people understand what you're thinking.

AT 6'4", 200# is not much weight for somebody who's getting strong. I started at around 6'3" and like 198 and was commonly described as a beanpole. I'm currently around 250.

6'2" 249 and drinking a little over 1/2 a gallon of 3.25% homogenized milk which is the closest thing I can get to whole milk in Canada.

It's doing the trick, no doubt about it.

How's that going to help my weight? Clearly I need to eat KONG.

Anyway yes, point taken, bitches. Would you accept that I'm not anorexic?
