Well, I would have preferred "Old Farts" to "The Elderly", but so be it. But seriously, let's use this forum as an opportunity to improve our training and show the punk kids how to train right!

In reading these recent posts, we can reach the following conclusions regarding the over 50 lifter:

1. We can still make progress, although it will be at a slower rate than someone in their 20s or 30s.

2. We will probably need more time to recover from our workouts.

3. We need to be particularly sensitive to the signs of overtraining.

I would add these conclusions as well:

1. We have to be very careful about our diet.

2. We need to focus on conditioning as well as strength training.

We should also take advantage of some the things that are in our favor:

1. We really take our training seriously. We're spending time in the gym and reading these (and other) forums when we could be watching Barnaby Jones.

2. We have time for training now that we don't have to take our kids to soccer practice and dance class.

3. We know how to set plans and carry them out.

4. We understand that strength and conditioning training is a lifelong pursuit, not something we do to look good for the summer.

5. We remember classic porn.

6. And, we will actually READ Starting Strength and Practical Programming.

We should also remember that there are lots of anecdotes about weight training that we know are not true. Think about the number of articles you can read that recommend against doing squats at ANY age.

I figure that alot of the information regarding the older 50 lifter is not complete. We are probably the first generation of over 50 lifters who are serious about our training and will show everyone else how it it's done. Let's share our experiences about what works and what doesn't and see how we can help each other meet our goals.

Look forward to getting to know you all!

Yeah, we can also show the young whippersnappers, and maybe some older ones as well, that it is never too late to start.

I plan on doing squat reps with 3 plates by my 48th next February.
