View Full Version : Like the two best drinks, but with more protein and lots of vitamins.

I just got myself some brewers yeast after it sounding so amazing on paper. It is 50% protein by weight. Contains large quantities of all B vitamins (except B12) plus PABA, Inositol & Choline.
Well I got some and wondered what exactly to do with it. Its a very fine powder so I decided to mix it with milk. And guess what? It tasted like BEER. This might be totally obvious but I kind of expected it to taste more like marmite/vegemite/natex.
But just like beer.
1 tablespoon has the same amount of protein as 1 egg. 2 tablespoons mixes pretty well into a glass of milk. Making a tasty nutrient dense "brew".
If you can get it fairly cheap where you are, and like the yeasty bitter taste of beer I strongly recommend it. Otherwise its probably better and cheaper to rely on whey protein + vitamin pills.

Sounds like something I have to try given my affinity to brew.
And the price is damn good too (http://www.backyardtobarnyard.com/product/Brewers_Yeast_20Lb).

Beer milk... I like it.
BTW, they sell this stuff for this purpose. Vegans (smart ones) love it. It's called "nutritional yeast".

Probably costs more when you call it "nutritional yeast" intead of "horse food" as tnumrych linked :p

We need to turn this idea on its head... sell things that are good for horses to vegans. It's a GOLDMINE!

Bear in mind the "horse grade" stuff has not been "de-bittered"
It may be a little strong tasting for us humans. The stuff I got was from a healthfood store and labelled as "de-bittered". I have not tried the horse grade stuff so do not know if there is much difference, but just bear it in mind.

Is this exactly the same shit that I buy when I brew beer?

I think the yeast is dead. Millions of used up yeast corpses. (surely not vegetarian?)

That is if the beer was pasteurized.

live yeast is a laxative so i hope it is dead or it might get messy

Hrm, I'd bet that it's not dead but just freeze-dried. It would come back to life if it was suspended in tepid sugar water. I suppose it's a good thing the stomach is an efficient killing machine.
