View Full Version : How long does whey protein stay good?

Im considering ordering a pretty large quantity of whey protein to save a little money. I have no refridgerator space for any of it, and was just wondering if it goes bad?
Logic suggests that it would as other milk products do not last long at all. I know protein has a fairly long shelf life written on the tubs, but im wondering if that is even accurate. Might it just mean, "will not turn posionous before this date". And surely hot weather might affect things?
I had some for well over a year. It tasted the same and reacted the same the entire time. I opted out of getting muscle biopsies or other lab techniques to test bioavailability.

If your concerns are contamination by bacteria or something, I wouldn't be very concerned. Whey powder is quite dry, and living things can't grow well in dry environments.

I'm not a food scientist, but this is what I would do:
Use heavy duty freezer zip lock bags. Don't over fill them. Pile some heavy books on the bags to squeeze out as much O as you can before you zip the last little bit. Then put those bags in old protein containers or other containers you have laying around.
Now you are ready for social and economic collapse. :)

Aren't you in the military? Do you know something we don't know?!
Note to self: stockpile whey protein, Ziplocs, and 12ga shells with zombie shot.

I'm out here, but I'm just a stinkin' contractor.
You'd be surprised at how often the conversation turns to zombie attacks in places like this.
i think you'll be ok. that stuff tends to be good for a few years and if you're a dedicated trainer you'll polish it off in no time.

You should be eating at least 6 scoops a day, shouldn't have to worry about it going bad.

You're supposed to eat it? stupid me, dissolving it, no wonder I'm not swole.

That's what you get for reading the directions. Never read the directions.
Maybe I'm an idiot but I leave a tub of it in my work truck so I can have some handy when I need it. I hope heat doesn't make it less useful, but I don't think so. It gets pretty hot down here in GA. I have some at the house too. And as far as getting old, I use it way too fast for that to happen. I did use some that I found at my parents house from about 2 years ago. I don't know how well it worked but I know it didn't mess up my guts.
