View Full Version : GOMAD side effects....

I don't know why, but while I have no problem drinking the gallon, it seems to suppress my appetite, maybe more than the calories would suggest. I've also been getting a dry throat and mouth periodically since eating it. Perhaps it's an illusion, but I was just curious if anyone else saw similar effects.

I had a friend in college who I swear polished off about that much just because he liked milk. He got so much calcium that his soft contact lenses would go cloudy.

Fortunately, I don't wear contacts. I'm going to pour myself another glass now.

The huge amount of calories contained in the milk blunts your appetite... your job is to eat anyhow.

Your calcium/contact lens theory sounds horrible.

Good luck with GOMAD.

I call BS on the contact lens theory. The amount of calcium isnt that much really. Natural spring water may contain loads of chalk, but it wouldnt be harmful.

Parts of Bill Starrs dietary recommendations was to take 2g of calcium pills (on top of milk in the diet) on a normal day but even more if ill/injured or for use as a tranquilizer.

A gallon of milk only contains 4400mg. Seems like roughly what the recommended amount would be.

If I knew who his optometrist was, you could always take it up with him assuming he's still alive. All I know is that it was his optometrist who said that his lenses were accumulating calcium. You can believe him or not, but at this point there is no way to get further evidence.

IIRC I saw them once and indeed they were white, not the subtle yellow I'd see in my contacts when they got old.

Understand that I've never seen anyone else in my life drink that much milk. It probably wasn't a whole gallon a day, but then I've never actually seen you guys on GOMAD, just read your postings on the internet. :) Heh--"you guys" is sort of funny because I bumped my consumption up to the full gallon a few days ago. I might be one of those guys....

That makes me think that if there was anyone doing SS straight-up in SoCal it would be educational to see how they do it. Learning how to clean, the most useful thing to see, won't help when I can't afford to drop a weight though. :( I am not sure if the cleans are useful when done light enough to ensure I don't lose control.

I'm going to try drinking the milk after meals. I was using it as a way to fill in between meals, but I am not that pleased with the results.

You can do both. Drink half a liter after meals, and another half as a snack later

It's been suggested here that smaller glasses more frequently might be better than slugging down a quart at a time, in terms of keeping your appetite up. I find that more than 750 mL or so leaves me feeling fullish, personally.

what kind of calcium did he suggest?

milk makes me extremely bloated. Is skim milk really that bad if I gain weight easily?

I also take liver tabs, do any of you use them?

Well, it's true I tend to drink a quart at a time. Tonight we went out to Red Lobster, and the butter sauce is apparently three quarters salt by weight. Or something, at least judging by the thirst it tends to create. But I was prepared with a quart of milk in a thermos in the car, and chugged it all down before we got home. Much better than drinking the milk first and then going in not very hungry.

Your body doesn't just grab every ounce of calcium you give it. WHen your body gets enough it starts lowering the amount of calcium that it absorbs in the gut, and even excretes it. Unless your friend's got some impaired metabolism or something it doesn't seem likely.

What I'd like to know is how many trips to the toilet are you guys making while doing GOMAD? A gallon of fucking milk. The most I ever did was maybe 1/3 of a gallon. I made up for the calories with more food.

Well it takes some time getting used to the "diarrhea effect". I believe your stomach adapts to larger quantity of milk over a time period. But does anyone here "suffer" or go through some bloating after a few glasses of milk? Or is it just me?

The liquid to solid ratio of your poo is related to the liquid to solid ratio of your intake....when I was doing GOMAD I was also eating a lot of solid foods, as well as mixing fiber into my morning shakes.

I've found that the more I eat, the less frequently I poo...although the poo is often epic 2 flush status.

I only drink 2 litres a day and eat heaps and have no problem with diaoria. Nuts seem to help

The cloudiness has nothing to do with milk intake. My contacts used to get cloudy as well (which is really annoying), swapped brands to a better lenses and the cloudiness went away. Didn't stop drinking milk.

Made the mistake of polishing off 2L of milk last night about an hour before bed, had to get up twice for a piss in the middle of the night.

I chugged a quart the other day as an after work snack. I drank it way too fast because I felt like crap for about 30 minutes while I waited on it to digest a little. I've done a quart in a single sitting before, but never that quickly.

You have a lot to learn. I once drank a quart in one sitting too. After eating 3 quarterpounders. Bitch.

fat is good, and 1% just tastes awful compared to whole

I seem to recall Rip stating that 1% was lacking some of the important nutrients... but I'm sure it isn't a waste of time.

Fat. Basically it's just about calories. If you, Mulgere, are gaining too much fat, perhaps you arent in the demographic for an entire GOMAD? I.e. 15-25 and incredibly underweight? Reading the "clarification" article is quite illuminating in understanding how to apply GOMAD.

There is the fact that whole milk has more calories, but that might not be the only thing. Fat content slows down the rate of digestion too.
