They say they'll let you know how they're doing next month. I bet they don't say anything if the guys all quit because they got sick. Just my prediction...

I see weightloss in their future, but I also see a decrease in performance. I don't understand how people can be so stupid.

Hat... no offense intended, but why do I see so many old fatties on the FD? Don't you think their performance would improve with a lowered cholesterol and bodyfat and weight? I don't think they'd stop all training during this time, so I really can't see how their performance would suffer.

Soy is not as good as beef for recovery. They're fat because they eat crap, not because they eat animal products.

That's not really the point here... they're "doing a diet" and that just happens to be vegan... at least they're doing it.

But really, why do I see so many fat old firefighters? (to be honest any firefighters I've never under 40y/o are generally in athlete shape, just the old ones with the moustaches are fat)

It kinda is the point. They're doing a sub-optimal diet. They would likely lose less lean tissue if they focused on animal and decreased the crap. Losing weight just for the sake of losing weight is not always beneficial.

I hope this doesn't get me blacklisted here:

Black Thought of The Roots is the only cool vegan, I am not willing to argue on this point.

Honestly? Laziness and the lack of mandatory PT/fitness training. Firefighting specific training is not enough to keep yourself in shape (I.E. Job function skills and the like). Most of the stations in my department have some cardio and weight equipment that consists of a treadmill/eliptical and a bench with some free weights and/or dumbells but some also have those stupid universal trainers that you will find in pieces in some back closet. But nothing is ever mandatory because it would be a change in working conditions which the Union would fight against (I am pro Union, just to clarify). It is also a very stressful job that increases all of the risk factors for being overweight/obese.

Back to the point of my post, my arguement is not with them trying to do something to better themselves. My arguement is with what they've chosen to better themselves with.

Mike Mahler is not stupid. He's cleverer and most definitly stronger than you. As are many vegans out there who actually have an interest in strength training . So, hows about you get off your high horse?

Even though i'm not a vegan myself, I respect these people for this selfless decision they've made.

Haha, "selfless." Give me a break.

Must you quote him? He's on my ignore list so I don't have to read his pointless drivel.

Haha, you're probably smarter than me. I don't want to give the fool the satisfaction, though. (Not that he could tell... I guess I should just stop feeding the trolls...)

What irks me is that they get away with calling it by the euphimistic and misleading "plant-based diet". It's not merely BASED ON plants (like say a "flexitarian" diet might be). It is a hyperrestrictive vegan diet. Or maybe "plants-only" diet. Why the whitewash?

Edited to add: Having said that, I am impressed with the improvement in health markers (esp blood work) for strict adherents to this kind of diet. I'll probably feel the need to switch to something like this someday. But I dread that day.

Unless you have some sort of freak allergy to Meats (beef, poultry, pork, etc...) there is no need to ever go to a vegan or vegitarian diet. The same results in blood work can be accomplished by eating the correct foods.

When I recently moved stations I volunteered myself to cook most meals. I know how to do it, and I'm good at it. I had my Lieutenant come back 4 months later telling me about the dramatic improvement that he had in his own blood work. Nothing in his diet at home had changed, but his diet on shift had changed dramatically. Going off the deep end is not the answer. Eating healthy meats with healthy fats and lots of fresh produce is how you enact change.

Best way to "improve blood limits": eliminate sugar, limit starch, eat a fat-based diet of mostly saturated fat.
