With a new program I leave my Starting Strength days behind me.

Bodyweight: 150 lbs. And I intend to change that!

I started the Bill Starr 5x5 today and was more winded and sweaty then tired. Vision began to fade at some points, merely a sign of too little oxygen and quickly remedied.

Squat: 120 lbs @ 1x5.
150 lbs @ 1x5.
180 lbs @ 1x5.
210 lbs @ 1x5.
240 lbs @ 1x5

Bench press: 65 lbs @ 1x5.
80 lbs @ 1x5.
95 lbs @ 1x5.
105 lbs @ 1x5.
125 lbs @ 1x5

Power clean:55 lbs @ 1x5.
65 lbs @ 1x5.
75 lbs @ 1x5.
85 lbs @ 1x5.
95 lbs @ 1x5.

Hope this is readable.

Wednesday; light day.

Squat: 120 lbs @ 1x5.
150 lbs @ 1x5.
180 lbs @ 2x5.

Easily done.

Press: 55 lbs @ 1x5.
65 lbs @ 1x5.
75 lbs @ 1x5.
85 lbs @ 1x5.

Once again, quite easy.

Deadlift: 170 lbs @ 1x5.
200 lbs @ 1x5.
230 lbs @ 1x5.
260 lbs @ 1x4.

Should have known better and started lower.

Squat: 125 lbs @ 1x5.
155 lbs @ 1x5.
185 lbs @ 1x5.
215 lbs @ 1x5.
245 lbs @ 1x3.
215 lbs @ 1x8.

Bench press: 70 lbs @ 1x5.
80 lbs @ 1x5.
90 lbs @ 1x5.
115 lbs @ 1x5.
130 lbs @ 1x5.
90 lbs @ 1x8.

Power clean: 95 lbs @ 4x5.
100 lbs @ 1x5.
85 lbs @ 1x8.

I made a very stupid mistake, I should have ramped up to the power clean on Friday.

You don't bump up the weight for all your sets on friday, just the top one, which will be a triple. You will then hit friday's triple for a set of 5 on monday, as well as bumping up your other sets. Also, you don't do the set of 8 for power cleans.

Just goes to show you I'm an idiot.

190 lbs @ 1x5.
220 lbs @ 1x5.
250 lbs @ 1x5.

Bench press: 75 lbs @ 1x5.
85 lbs @ 1x5.
95 lbs @ 1x5.
115 lbs @ 1x5.
135 lbs @ 1x5.
This was too easy, I felt, almost suspiciously easy.

Power clean: 65 lbs @ 1x5.
75 lbs @ 1x5.
85 lbs @ 1x5.
95 lbs @ 1x5.
105 lbs @ 1x5.

I had the most trouble with the lighter weights, I kept expecting a difficult jump and it didn't come until at least 95, and at some points during power cleans I almost lost control of the bar because of the excess force.

Well, because I'm a damned fool I set the press weight to 102.5 and failed the first rep on the first try and the last rep on the second.

Squat: 130 lbs @ 1x5.
160 lbs @ 1x5.
190 lbs @ 2x5.

Press: 57.5 lbs @ 1x5.
77.5 lbs @ 1x5.
87.5 lbs @ 1x5.
102.5 lbs @ 1x5.

Deadlift: 155 lbs @ 1x5.
185 lbs @ 1x5.
215 lbs @ 1x5.
245 lbs @ 1x5.

I really have to sort out this wrong weight crap right now.

Power clean: 65 lbs @ 1x5.
75 lbs @ 1x5.
85 lbs @ 1x5.
95 lbs @ 1x5.

I'm pretty happy with how this session turned out, nothing is as difficult as last time around.

I now weigh 153 lbs, so apparently I'm doing something right.

The Emancipated Freak
04-27-2011, 08:00 PM
Squat: 135 lbs @ 1x5.
165 lbs @ 1x5.
195 lbs @ 2x5.

Press: 60 lbs @ 1x5.
70 lbs @ 1x5.

90 lbs @ 1x5.

Deadlift: 160 lbs @ 1x5.
190 lbs @ 1x5.
220 lbs @ 1x5.
252.5 lbs @ 1x5.

First squat set was done slowly and deliberately, sped it up as the weight got higher, they were done very easily and quickly. Press sets were done with very small amounts of rest but completed easily. Deadlift was more difficult than I would like, the belt seemed like it was hindering my back set up, didn't like it.

165 lbs @ 1x5.

Bench press:77.5 lbs @ 1x5.
90 lbs @ 1x5.
105 lbs @ 1x5.
122.5 lbs @ 1x5.
140 lbs @ 1x3.

Power clean: 65 lbs @ 1x5.
75 lbs @ 1x5.
85 lbs @ 1x5.
95 lbs @ 1x5.
115 lbs @ 1x5.

The squats were fairly easily done, 260 felt easier than last time around, squatting heavy makes the last set of eight seem surprisingly easy. Bench press form wasn't as tight as I would like but I lifted it alright. Power cleans as always were more difficult with the smaller weights than the bigger one.

Power clean: 65 lbs @ 1x5.
75 lbs @ 1x5.
85 lbs @ 1x5.
95 lbs @ 1x5.
115 lbs @ 1x5.

Well, I have screwed this up again, in that I didn't add five pounds to the first four sets.

I wasn't happy with how the squats felt, they just felt off. Bench press was easy, was confident in my ability to do it without a spotter. Got lucky this time, can't afford same gamble in the future. Power cleans felt very relieving, very good.

Deadlift: 170 lbs @ 1x5.
200 lbs @ 1x5.
230 lbs @ 1x5.
260 lbs @ 1x5.

Squats were very easy, done quickly. Press was fast and powerful, too far ahead of my face for my liking, have to work on that. Deadlift was done in running shoes for the first two sets, wised up before the last two though, didn't chalk up before last set just as my palms began to sweat, got kind of close to dropping the bar.

85 lbs @ 1x5.
100 lbs @ 1x5.
110 lbs @ 1x5.
120 lbs @ 1x3.

Squats were easy, last set was a grinder, though. Was happy with form overall. Bench press was done easily, going to have to make the lockout better. Power cleans were over all quite easy, done with the sleeves on boxes to make it like I was cleaning 45s.

Did some snatches afterwards, failed miserably, in addition to getting a thousand pound overall, I've added being able to snatch my body weight to my goals.

Power clean: 80 lbs @ 1x5.
90 lbs @ 1x5.
100 lbs @ 1x5.
110 lbs @ 1x5.
120 lbs @ 1x5.

This was a grueling session, didn't have usual access to food, but went well. Squats got difficult around 235, 265 was a grinder but I buried it. Bench press was very easy, went through almost all the sets with no rest, wasn't happy with wrist position during last set. Power clean was hard, even with long rests between them they still killed me.

A very difficult workout, just before cleans I had to run tell my brother about the handkerchief code so he would stop using a blue bandana, could barely run up the stairs I was so tired.

How tall are you, out of curiosity?

Height is 5' 7". Weight is 157 lbs.

Squat: 145 lbs @ 1x5.
175 lbs @ 1x5.
205 lbs @ 2x5.

Press: 65 lbs @ 1x5.
75 lbs @ 1x5.
85 lbs @ 1x5.
95 lbs @ 1x5.

Deadlift: 165 lbs @ 1x5.
200 lbs @ 1x5.
235 lbs @ 1x5.
267.5 lbs @ 1x5.

Squats were easy, done in quick succession. Press was easy for the most part, got kind of hard toward the end. Deadlifts were more disappointing than my son, and unlike my son, they didn't hang themselves in a truck stop bathroom. Didn't like grip at all, back wasn't set well. Need to fix these damn form issues.

That's about what I figured. Looks like you're gaining.

You just not getting set before you pull, on the deadlift? Or having trouble setting up?

I feel like I'm able to set up but once I pull my upper back feels like it is rounding a lot. I already think I have a good solution for them but that's going to be next Wednesday so won't worry about it now.

95 lbs @ 1x5.
105 lbs @ 1x5.
115 lbs @ 1x5.
125 lbs @ 1x5.

Squats were grinders on the last set but easy overall.

Bench is going to be chalked up to a bad few days for eating and not enough rest between sets.

Power cleans were sloppy form wise, cleaned up once it got heavy.

This wasn't a very good few days food wise so I'm going to have to fix that. A lot. Big weigh in tomorrow, can't afford failure.

Squats were done easily with almost no rest between sets. Press was easier than last time and form was better. This was one of the best deadlift session I've had in a very long time. It really is great to have days like this.

Height still stands at 5' 7", weight is now 160, making this the the twenty fifth pound put on since starting lifting.

Bench press was fairly easy throughout, proves that the failure on Monday was because of calories.

Power cleaning was very fun, felt great too. Going to be awesome next Saturday to use the 45s.

292.5 lbs @ 1x3.

Squats were fast and easy, accidentally jumped at the last rep of 170.

Knit boxers? It's an amazing coincidence that three of my sisters and my mom knit.

Well, awhile ago I tried and succeeded, it seems all this cleaning has brought up my max quite a bit. The same for the bench press.

Usually eggs in the morning sausage when I can get it , if not eggs, well I just have a huge amount of oatmeal to make up for the calories. Every night I can I have 4 open face sandwiches slathered with peanut butter. Tonight I added pizza to the mix. And for lunch it really depends on what was for supper the day before, although I don't decide that.

nah, I have just had trouble getting the supposedly minimal .5lb muscle/week lately and have been asking people who are gaining weight about their diets. It's pretty easy for me to just gain a ton of fat by overeating like crazy, but so far my body hasn't been cooperating with muscle gains. I'm changing things up in the next six weeks and will see how it goes.

Nice work on the PR. You're at a great time to get nice and strong. Wish I had done it in high school, as opposed to 15 years later.

Of course, at 18 I routinely ate more than 3,500 calories a day at a weight of 140 (i was the only person I knew who ran out of meal points in the dorm, fortunately all my lady friends took turns feeding me after I ran out), and didn't gain more than a pound or two. So. Maybe wouldn't have worked too well.

Could just be a shitty (deadlift) workout. Happens. Dan John talks about this in his very good collection of essays "Never Let Go".

Also, how do you think about pulling off the floor? I find that I have much better form and the weight is much lighter if I treat a deadlift like the beginning of an O-lift, and try to do it explosively. That tends to help me keep my back set and tight, as does avoiding fiddling with my grip and foot position. Now, I may not be pulling as close to my max weight as you are, and I'm not lifting as much, so. Grain of salt.

Squat: 140 lbs @ 1x5.
170 lbs @ 1x5.
210 lbs @ 1x5.
245 lbs @ 1x5.
285 lbs @ 1x3.
210 lbs @ 1x8.
Done easily, don''t feel like this was the max effort, though.

Bench press: 72.5 lbs @ 1x5.
90 lbs @ 1x5.
107.5 lbs @ 1x5.
120 lbs @ 1x5.
135 lbs @ 1x5.
152.5 lbs @ 1x3.
107.5 lbs @ 1x8.
Quite easy, may go to five pound increments.

Power clean: 100 lbs @ 1x5.
110 lbs @ 1x5.
120 lbs @ 1x5
130 lbs @ 1x5.
140 lbs @ 1x3.
Nearly hit my chin at 140, top set almost always feels easier than the previous sets.

Today my Mom asked if I was getting bigger, I guess this points to some progress. And before that a guy I hadn't seen since before New Year said I was getting a gut, and one other person said I was getting a bigger butt. I guess that's progress.

I'd rather fall backwards, I think, than forwards. Though, i don't have any kind of safety device what-so-ever.

I also suck at racking the bar with power cleans. To the extent that I can't get into a proper elbows up position. I think I have long forearms. Also, I don't really have any delts, which I'm sure doesn't help. So I feel you there. This is part of why I switched to power snatches. In addition to snatches being cooler, and the bar path being longer.

Have an extra protein shake and pretend you were intentionally doing protein-sparing intermittent fasting. That's how I roll, at least ;-)

I think falling forward is better because if I fall backward while squatting even as modest a weight as mine could get you a very bent bar. And it really wasn't falling, more like squatting particularly far forward onto the safety catches.

215 lbs @ 1x5.
250 lbs @ 1x5.

115 lbs @ 1x5.
135 lbs @ 1x5.
157.5 lbs @ 1x3.

Not as much rest used as normal, last rep 157.5 was a grinder, will feel better next time I'm sure.

Cleans are quickly increasing in difficulty, more calories!

The past week has been marked with food shortages such as eggs, peanut butter, and bread, all essentials to my diet. But now I'm stocked full with them and am able to start more progress!

Apparently, swimmers are in need of significantly more calories than people attempting to gain weight. I realize this today because I was barred form having peanuts as a snack on a day when I am genuinely scared of failing. And this isn't even mentioning that breakfast fiasco.

No clue about the cleans. Technique is such a big factor with that exercise that it could have easily accounted for your issues.

Re the squats, in terms of how much mental strength you need to muster up, how difficult would you say 295x3 is for you vs 225x8?

The Emancipated Freak
06-17-2011, 08:33 PM
For the first two reps of cleans I just attempted to stand right up, definitely accounted for the failures. After the first failed rep I was only focusing on explosive hip drive. So obviously technique issues.

I would say that I had to force myself under the bar for 295, I didn't have to for 225. After rep three @ 225 I was exhausted and was just pushing on and on. Didn't feel challenging, more like finishing a race. You get tired, and then you don't get much more tired at all. Does that make any sense?

Is the Freak competing?

Or is this in support of kinfolk?

Just got home from the meet. I wasn't competing. Was there to watch hamburgerfan I might sign up next year, when my numbers are, you know, good. I fell asleep on the floor behind chairs in a hotel multiple times. It was long and I was extremely bored at times, but it was cool overall.

That's actually what I did.

Squat: 145 lbs @ 1x5.
180 lbs @ 1x5.
215 lbs @ 1x5.
250 lbs @ 1x5.
285 lbs @ 1x5.
285 wasn't easy but was done with deep, solid reps.

Bench 95 lbs @ 1x5.
110 lbs @ 1x5.
125 lbs @ 1x5.
140 lbs @ 1x5.
155 lbs @ 1x5.
Was told by two people that I need to get more stable control of the bar. Kept moving side to side.

Power clean: 95 lbs @ 1x5.
105 lbs @ 1x5.
115 lbs @ 1x5.
125 lbs @ 1x5.
135 lbs @ 1x5.
145 lbs @ 1x5.
When I was typing this I realized I did six sets. Still got 145 so that's all that matters.

Me, and hamburglar friend (HF) were lifting with hamburglar supervising. When a friend of mine and my brother, whom we'll call Mr. Jean (French pronunciation), came down to make fun of us as we lifted. Eventually we get all into a wild rumpus, when my oldest brother came down. Usually stressed out at the mere sight of me and the burglar. But this time he was in a really good mood. He even deadlifted and benched. Says he may go on a program with just bench and deadlift. Strange things are afoot.

Virtually painless today. Apparently hamberfan had this happen to him. He said it was most likely hyper extension of the back that caused this. Told me to just go to bed and I will probably be fine my morning. He was right. Got to stop missing these Friday workouts. Now I have to eat like an asshole for Monday.

In lighter news I'm probably going to enter a meet in December. Hopefully by then my numbers will cause less shame.

That 300x5 barrier in the dead, in ANYTHING is a huge mental boost. Nice work.

Now, in my opinion the number one thing a lifter has to do to make gains, great gains, is to show up. Regularly. You have that down pat.

And number two would be being smart enough to know when to NOT lift. One of my biggest flaws lifting wise. You made a great decision in knowing to take a few days off to heal up.

Good luck on your meet. It doesn't matter what numbers you end up with, it is a baseline in which to judge progress on future competitions. Just go in relaxed knowing that your do your best and establishing your baseline.

Thanks, Oldster! my back is mostly fine now. I'll be definitely be ready by Monday. Of course, before I called it quits I tried 265 two more times. So that was probably what fucked my back up so much.

I'll definitely enter the meet if I have any money. Being a poor bastard is hard.

I used to shout at stray dogs to get jobs. Now the tables have turned.

How much does it cost to enter a meet? Do different meets cost differently or is there a standard fee?

Maybe you can do some speed work and see if your back is ok. Take 50% of your 1RM to start. You can just do 10 sets of 2. Use a box if you got one. That might be light enough to not hurt your back, but at the same time give you some good power training (especially off the box). Just try to keep it light and take it easy.

Best of luck recovering from the strained muscles.

The whole thing is set up for quick workouts, with minimal soreness.

The workout would be only two lifts, in this case, press and deadlift. It's 2 sets of 5, you do the first set, then take 10 percent off. It can be done to a maximum of 5 days a week. I've recommended this one to a pal of hamburgerfan's and he likes it.
