View Full Version : Coaching squat in VA, DC, MD
I posted this thread about a month ago but it seems like it got wiped out.
Rip, I tried every coach in the directory for the DC tri-state area. They are either not available for coaching anymore or not responding. I also got in touch with Gillian Mounsey but she moved out of VA.
I met with a crossfit "Coach" in DC but that was a waste of money and time for reasons that are not even worth explaining. Do you know any other coaches or any one else who would?
Thanks!!!

We'll ask if there's anyone Gillian knows who could get the job done.

Perhaps after your seminar in May there will be a plethora of new local coaches available. Other than that--I have no answers. I was fortunate enough to get to Gillian before she left. There are a couple of local crossfit trainers I respect as dedicated fitness professionals--but I do not know about their ability to coach the lifts properly. I guess the good news is I am starting to run into more folks using SS at the University gym and otherwise.

I am very hesitant of going to a cross fitter for coaching. About a month ago I was referred to a cross fitter in DC who can "coach" the low bar back squat. The referral was from one of the resources listed on this site as a a coach in the Tri-state area who was not coaching anymore. Here are a few points as to why I thought it was a waste of time and money:
1. He told me it would be better if I squat bear footed or with flats rather than using weight lifting shoes. And the shoes I have are the Do-Win shoes which have a pretty small heel.
2. He told me that I should point my toes fully straight with no angle. And he gave some scientific sounding reasons as to why......
3. The most surprising was that he told me if I squat high bar it will resolve some of the potential issues I have with low bar ......
And at same time he mentioned he is such an advocate of Rip's method! I obviously cannot generalize this epic fail of coaching to every cross fitter but it sure did leave a bad impression. Now that I think about it more I should have refused to pay him.

Shitty coaching is the norm, unfortunately. E-mail me the name of the no-longer-coaching person who gave you the erroneous referral and we will take it down from our list.
