I am a freshman and am looking for 1st place at University Weightlifting Nationals before or during senior year.

I am posting a new training log on here because I want to start fresh. The old one is still accessible.

Here's the tentative routine:
Thursday
Snatch 20/doubles up to a miss
Olympic squat- Max single / max double
Press 1RM (this will be for a month, and then I will press once a week in a 5/3/1 style-format, and then after another month get back to the maxes for a month. Rinse and repeat.)
Pull-ups/chins (1xfailure)

Friday
C&J 10/doubles up to a miss
PowerSnatch – Max single / max double / 10
FrontSquat 1RM

Sunday
Snatch – WUPTAM (work up to a miss)
Clean – WUPTAM
Jerk - WUPTAM
Press 3x3 (Bench will probably be gone forever)



Monday
HeavySnatch – YOU WILL LIFT BIG WEIGHTS
HeavyC&J - ^Likewise
Low Bar Squat 1RM
DeadliftTriples (probably will eventually be taken out all together in favor of better recovery. Must accomplish goal of 495x3 first)



Tuesday
FrontSquat 2RM/3RM



I am going to be slowly taking out the extra exercises, and simultaneously adding more squats, front squats, clean and jerks, snatches, and maybe some power cleans/snatches.

My goal with body-weight is to not go above 280 lb until the summer, because I have plenty of time to gain weight.

Like last week, the power snatches just felt awkward. So I went back to the empty bar and practiced my hook grip to death (exaggeration). Jason was able to watch the empty bar work and help me by identifying two things: 1) I am not internally rotating my arms at the shoulder joint while in setting up to pull. As soon as did the internal rotation, the bar went in its nice vertical bar path close to my body. I stopped internally rotating my arms months ago because I figured its only use was learning how to not pull with the arms. I was wrong. 2) My left foot was landing slightly behind my right foot. An active stomp into my foot prints was the cue that helped alleviate this problem.

I know I can snatch at least 90, and that is what I told myself. I did not snatch 90. That will be next week.
My cut on my shin (from snatching) started to sting with the last two 90 attempts. Not an excuse. Stinging pain is all mental.

i'm only asking because it looks like you have a lot of misses at what should be light weights

It was about 4-5 months before I stopped having to tape up my shins and it was fucking annoying.

Tried it today, actually. Didn't work out at all. It worked on the clean, but cleans aren't the problem. I will try again on Sunday.

if the bar is scraping up your shins, either your knees aren't pushed out enough (what dave said), you aren't moving your knees back during the 1st pull, the bar is too close to your heel, or a combination of all 3

You should probably do this with the bar, 35, and 40 to start. If you are using something less than 40, then you can do the power snatch and full snatch from the hang.

"Seriously, just set up for your clean WITH A FUCKING VELCRO BELT ON and deadlift the bar with your clean grip and stance. That is all. It is not a clean pull. It is a deadlift with your clean stance and grip."

Moser always reminds me that there are ups and downs, PR streaks and dark times in weightlifting. It is my job to show up, do the work and not quit. It is his job to deal with the ups and downs.

I slipped off a four foot ledge and my thigh landed on the edge. I have a huge bruise and can barely walk. I am icing and talking ibuprofen. I am also trying to bring back the range of motion by flexing and extending my knee.
If all is well tomorrow, I will try body squats.

I have been doing the Olympic lifts since September. Before that, I did Starting Strength since May. My weight was 255 at the end of summer. It is currently above 270. (I'm 6'5", so that influences it.

Evening practice:
Snatch bar work. Drills focused on the "snatch warm-up" and muscle/full snatching from the hip.

Clean bar work. Tried doing stuff from the hip, but it was too light/awkward. I put on 50# so that I could do cleans from the hip at 95#. Was pretty legit. It was challenging to do the pull from the hip and still move the feet into the correct spot.

Overhead bar work. Lots of push press and some push jerks to work on the dip and drive, which feels very awkward and unnatural. I also focused on keeping the elbows completely locked.

Tried a split with body weight, and that is the only time I felt my quad injury throughout the entire session. The impact of the split was the problem.

I believe my shoulder problem was initially caused by catching cleans with a closed grip, as opposed to letting go of the bar. As far as I can tell, I have very sensitive shoulders.

I don't do prehab. I do not really know what prehab is. The strategy right now for the Olympic lifts is to do it in a way that doesn't hurt. In this week's case, I am not doing any overhead work at all. I am still front squatting, but am not supposed continue with the workout if it starts to hurt.

The main problem with front squats is that when they get heavy I lean over (which is inevitable to an extent), causing the bar to push down on my hand. Pushing my wrist back in this manner seems to be one of the causes of pain for my shoulder.

Note: It is not actually the posterior deltoid that is hurting, but rather one of the smaller muscles in there that I can't remember the name of.

Anterior is bothering you? That is different than what I just described. The other half of why I am not doing anything overhead this week is because my shoulders were bothering me anteriorly. I think they were just tired from lots of pressing and push pressing, combined with the Olympic lifts. The main reason I am convinced my anterior shoulder irritation is fatigue-related is because the pain is not sharp (my posterior delt problem is sharp pain, when it is at its worst).

I don't know. Shoulders are confusing.

Shoulder prehabilition as opposed to rehabilition. The idea is if you do enough of it you won't run into shoulder problems, I'll admit I'm not all that familiar with it other than the fact I've seen it recommended on a few weightlifting sites. I agree though, shoulders are confusing. When other things have been sore I've known why and have been able to correct it...I'm clueless here though.

So, in the middle of the front squat work out, I felt quad soreness. My quads only become sore after I am done lifting, so this is very weird. This also happened last Monday, except for it was a lot less exaggerated today. This makes me believe that the rest day is causing a build up of muscle soreness. Sounds Bulgarian.
Naturally, I wasn't feeling especially strong. Even worse, I felt very little confidence for the following "power" lifts.

You had a good day today. I got a triple cheeseburger on the way home. About to eat more. If I have to weigh 136 to hit a 170 front squat this summer, then so be it.

I make no promises about tomorrow's workout... Understood. Cleans might not be a good idea, but I am down with whatever because of the option to stop when pain arises. I guess I would have to be down with whatever regardless of the situation.

The shoulder is a pain in the ass, but Tbone knows how to deal with by using days without (heavy) overhead work. It helps a lit.

The heavy FS are going great, with the exception of these past couple of days. I went way to hard on Monday and my quads have consequently been sore to a very high extent.

Well, the snatch is it's own monster. Being able to front squat more has definitely help me clean better.

The reason I do singles is because I am looking to max out as much as possible. I don't know about this explosiveness business. I have yet to actually be explosive (not intentionally).

I woke up at 5 to work and had only six hours of sleep. I had no food/coffee until after I got tests done at my cardiologist. The cardiologist made me RUN in a stress test. I thought I was going to throw up. Now I have to wear electrodes on my chest for 24 hours. This means that training was not fun.

I have a meet at the end of the month and will be training what I'd call completely Bulgarian after that.
I do a lot like y'all though and throw in presses & any exercises that I feel are beneficial and help address weaknesses.

More along the lines of the maxing- heavy with some back off volume, and tapering volume every weeks as my body adapts.
Like i said, if I feel like there's something extra I need to do to address weaknesses (like right now my hamstrings) then I'll put that in there for some time also.

The reason I switched is mainly because I don't want to have to worry about knee position or depth. I see low bar squatting as valuable, but I see high bar squatting as more valuable/effective in my situation.
-Important to this switch is that my HBBS is very very deep; this will be useful for snatching and if I ever catch a clean with too wide of a stance.

The common assumption is that low bar squatting will mess with the back angle of Olympic lifting. This is not true. Why would it be true? What merit is there to that observation? I guess it makes sense if I only back squatted and didn't front squat, but then even high bar's back angle would have a similar effect on the inability to recover proper;y on snatches and clean and jerks.

The fact is that I front squat way more than I back squat. The only reason I have been back squatting every day this week is because PRing is fun and my shoulders/pubic bone are limiting my ability to lift overhead.

The reason I do not want to low bar any more is because I do not want to coach my low bar. That is the main reason. I am very good at looking at people's form for LBBS, and consequently know when I am not doing the movement as it should be done. This is problematic for me. But with HBBS, I just put the bar on my traps, set up the feet (which I don't even really worry about), and squat. Bam.

The effect of back squatting is that my upper body is not the limiting factor and that I get to feel very heavy weights. This is what John Broz would say is the reasoning for back squatting. I like it. If low barring complicates this, then I do not like that.

High level weightlifters in the US who bad-mouth the low bar are silly because they have never low barred, do not understand the mechanics of low bar, and are extremely biased against any one who lifts differently than they do.

In fact, the other day I proposed to Tbone that we try sumo squats one day. For fun. I just don't care enough about the details of what type of back squat I am doing when I max the Front squat over 12 times a week.

The common assumption is that low bar squatting will mess with the back angle of Olympic lifting. This is not true. Why would it be true? What merit is there to that observation? I guess it makes sense if I only back squatted and didn't front squat, but then even high bar's back angle would have a similar effect on the inability to recover proper;y on snatches and clean and jerks.

Rip pointed this out in one of the threads in his Q&A about high-bar vs. low-bar for weightlifters a few weeks ago. I will say I have to pay more attention to my body when I low bar squat vs. high bar squat. Honestly back angle is the last thing on my mind when I snatch or clean. I was just curious as to why you were worrying about your back angle, c'est tout, it's something I can relate to. If you keep setting 12 squat records a week you're going to be a beast.

I still stand by my assessment. If you're constantly driving up your squat I like to believe the snatch and clean will follow. I personally don't see much (if any) improvement in my snatch/clean numbers if I don't progress my squats. I have to accept the fact that my technique is never going to be great, 30 is a bit old to start (while not impossible). If I can keep building strength the lifts will follow, or that's what my coach keeps hammering away at. Sqwats and poools, followed by more sqwats and poools and then throw in some poools and sqwats (he's got an accent).

The reason I do not want to low bar any more is because I do not want to coach my low bar. That is the main reason. I am very good at looking at people's form for LBBS, and consequently know when I am not doing the movement as it should be done. This is problematic for me. But with HBBS, I just put the bar on my traps, set up the feet (which I don't even really worry about), and squat. Bam.

Hopefully I don't make this explanation too complicated, but this is a very good question.

1) I'm tall.
2) I cannot get a good bar grip because the collars limit how wide I can get: my grip is artificially narrow.
3) If I hit the bar with my hips, then it hits my pubic bone. Normally this is the by-product of a poorly executed pull, but not necessarily in my case.
4) By keeping my arms bent throughout the entire pull, I can actually hit where the snatch is supposed to hit, which is above the pubic bone.

Let me tell you about these snatches. It hurts my back to pull and hurts my legs to stand it up. This is Bulgaria. For the record, Bulgarians don't go from maxing squat 1x per week to maxing squat 5x per week. I just did it because I knew I would PR every time. Next week won't have this much back squatting, I believe - or at least not that intense.

Felt good. Most of the reps hit closer to the belly, so that is interesting. I'm not sure what I should do about it touching my thigh. It hasn't been, and I have let that happen. I feel like I want it to touch at least the bottom of my thigh. Not touching the thigh has worked, but it is rather mysterious i.e. not touching the thigh means that I don't know where the bar is. Hmm...

Overall, I feel great!
