What's the reason for doing a heavy single before 5x5? I noticed Jordan does this as well.

It just ensures that you stay accustomed to handling heavier poundages, even in a phase of volume accumulation. In the immediate, it makes the sets of 5 feel a little easier.

Would this heavy single be counterproductive in a H/M/L setup, when the worksets are 3x5 for example? I'm talking about a setup like in your articles on your webpage.
I had great success with the high intensity phase of it, where I've used 1s, 2s and 3s. Now that I'll switch back to the higher volume phase with 5s, I'm wondering if a similar approach with a heavy single before the sets of fives would make sense, or just take energy out the 3x5 when the weight gets heavy?
