Hello,

a few days ago I was going through Mark Hales' regular column in Octane magazine, to which I have been subscribed. At some point, while talking about tyre pressure, he writes that "it behoves the driver to know how the pressure in the tyres reacts to a few laps at high speed", or words to that effect.

The important point is the use of the verb 'to behove'. I have only ever seen it used in one other place, and that was in one of your Press instructional videos, where you pronounced it with a very long 'o', like it was spelled 'to behoove'.

Anyway, it took a while, then I started to notice some coincidences. Mr Hales shares his first name with you, and an impressive beard. And, he is capable to use a verb like 'behove' in the right way.
I think the probability that these three facts are just coincidences is fairly small, and I'm beginning to suspect this is another one of your interesting alter egos.

Hi Rip.
Have you had any experiences with torn gemellus muscles?

For the last couple of years I've had issues with random lower-back/glute pain. I got an ultrasound the other day and found that I have:
- A large disruption through the left superior gemellus with a small amount of the muscle remaining.
- A large tear in the medial aspect of the left inferior gemellus.
- Thickened an irregular right superior gemellus (suggestive of a past tear)
- A large old tear in the right inferior gemellus.

Oddly enough I can never recall having any kind of traumatic incident which would cause this.

My rehab plan (in addition to physio 'strengthening' stuff I'll be perscribed) is to

1) 'Foam roll' with a cricket ball to try and break up any scar tissue (already do this) and try and get a brutal massage of the muscles.

2) Really focus on external rotation and getting my knees out, and keeping them out in the squat (I'm guilty of letting my knees drop in on the ascension).

Would be interested if you or anybody on the board had experience with this kind of injury?

Age:27
Weight: 98kg
Squatted 3x5x165kg the day before the ultrasound.

Rip:

First off, thanks for your advice with my broken foot. If it weren't for you I wouldn't have hit that monster clean PR at 151 kg a week ago. In fact, I would be just getting back to heavy lifting if I were listening to the doctor's rehab advice.

On another note, my friend hurt his wrist on FS. I figured you would be able to give him some good direction, so I asked him to write up a description of what happened:
"The injury occurred on April 29. I dumped a front squat but I was way down in the hole and my right elbow somehow got caught on my right knee. This caused the bar to hyperextend my right wrist and then I heard an audible pop and shooting pain. I took a few days off from lifting and then started to front squat again. Racking the bar was pretty uncomfortable, but I wouldn't necessarily say painful. My middle, ring, and pinky have full grip but I can't do a pullup without pain because of my thumb and index finger.

It started feeling a little better so I did cleans for a few days but tweaked it again and it hasn't gotten better since. I can do light presses as long as I have good bone support. If I use snatch grip and put the bar overhead I have extreme pain in the meaty part of my hand between the thumb and index and the two tendons/ligaments (I don't know if this is right, I'm just trying to be specific in where the pain is) that attach to my index and thumb feel like they're on fire.

I can't get an MRI because I have about fifteen pieces of shrapnel in various parts of my body. I've been icing and wearing a splint. I've seen a PT twice and recommends just wearing the brace and taking time off. However, I'm impatient and it's been a month and a half with little progress.

And when the bar is overhead I have pain in the base of my wrist right below the thumb"

Do you have any advice for the lad?

Thanks again.
Zach

Bill Starr talks a lot about biorythm in his book Defying Gravity and seems to be pretty convinced of the concept. Are you? Have you ever used biorythm calculations?

Personally, while there is no doubt that people go through physical, emotional and intellectual cycles - none of these attributes are static - I think it's a little far fetched to assign fixed cycle lengths to them. I don't think biorythm has a lot of value, but then again I never tried it. What do I know.

So I've had this very annoying weird pain since December.

It feels like a burning line while the abdominals contract at a certain angle. Sometimes it takes 1-2 seconds to start hurting, and it stops when I stop the exercice. However, it's really unbearable and it's definitely more than just a slight discomfort, it's one of these pains where your body is saying "you'll snap your shit if you keep doing this".
I feel it when I do hollow holds and many other ab exercices, even at the end position while doing the row machine.

At first I thought it might be a hernia but it doesn't really feel like my inguinal hernia. First, it's not located at the same place : I feel my inguinal hernia right next to my dick as well as in by testicle, and I feel discomfort at random times during the day (and mostly when I am holding in a heavy shit), while the "new pain" is on the other side, and is right between where the abs and the pubic region meet (instead of the groin).

I have represented the ab pain in red, and the inguinal hernia in light blue.

Also, as I said, it only hurts DURING the ab contraction and mostly at particular angles (altho I also feel it when doing planks or L-sits where the torso is upright, and I feel it A LOT when I try one-arm push-ups). I have been told that it's most likely a muscle tear (since I have weak abs to begin with) but it's been 6 months and it's just as present (not better nor worse) so I don't believe it.

I don't know how I got it, but it might have appeared after I attempted a 1RM deadlift. I have only done RDL before and I attempted a 1RM attempt the first time I tried classic deadlifts (my 3x5 RDL weight is the same as the 1RM deadlift I did).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'll go to the doctor again but I doubt they'll be of any help.

UPDATE: Two days ago I tried doing some hollow holds, and it didn't hurt at first so I did two sets, and at the third set I felt the pain again, but this time, it's been following me after I have finished the set (in other words, I still feel it even if I am sitting on the computer).

How is it that programs such as traditional westside work with the base of their program being a max effort single or triple? Is it from the volume of the supplemental lifts? Im not trying to bash your programming or westside, just curious!

Hi Rip,

I'm an occasional trumpet player, but don't play very often these days. Part of the problem with brass instruments is that any sort of a layoff really hurts one's range and endurance, presumably due to atrophy of the involved facial muscles. Recently, I have done two experiments:

1) Recovering range in trumpet playing while lifting weights. I played for a week a few months ago, and quickly got back all the range I ever had, much quicker than I used to come back after a layoff when I didn't lift.

2) Today, I picked it up again, cold, after two months off, and found that I had lost almost nothing of what I gained during experiment #1.

I think this is an anecdote in support of the theory that barbell training makes your whole system stronger, even the buccinators and other facial muscles that aren't receiving any direct work.

Thought you'd find this interesting.

Hi all-

first an intro and summary. I'm 29, 5 11, 185 lbs, and been lifting since 12/12. 3x a week, alternating days between OHP and bench, squatting on workouts 1 and 3 and deadlifting on day 2.

I'd been able to make significant gains on all of the compound lifts and was just starting to see the visual results I was looking for. On 6/2, I was boxing, took a seemingly normal step back, and BAM! Somebody hit me in the heel with a hammer. Or that's what it felt like. I actually ruptured my left achilles tendon, for which I go into surgery to repair tomorrow.

My lifting knowledge is rudimentary- I really only know the basic compound lifts, and I don't think I will be doing those for a while (except maybe bench press).

I'm hoping that you all and Mr. Rippetoe(who I know suffered a similar injury) might be able to help me develop some kind of program that would allow me to maintain, or even make gains on my upper body and core, and even lower body as long as it doesn't put me at an enhanced risk of re-rupture. Some kind of three day split so that I won't lose what strength I have gained in the past 6 months. I'll probably be in a big robocop boot and crutches a few weeks post op.

I'm thinking it will involve weighted chins, maybe bench, seated press, and machines (which I don't know how to use)? I'm not really sure. And how many weeks did you wait post op to start working out? I want to get back in and start pushing myself again.

Anyone "prescribe" me a simple, 3 day split that I can use to keep me sane during the long road of recovery ahead?

Will be on vacation for 3 weeks enjoying the sunshine and need a place to squat.

I would also like to say thanks to Rip and everyone that contributes here. I just completed 1 year of SS (the age adapted version) with significant quality of life improvements. Here's the progress report:

52 year old male.

Weight 162 -- 185
SQ 150 -- 270 (5x3)
DL 185 -- 330 (9 reps)
Press 95 -- 130 (5x3)
Bench 140 -- 205 (5x3)

A couple glasses of raw milk per day for 6 months was a big boost.

The most significant improvement however has been my right hip which was in bad shape. There was significant atrophy of leg muscles (glute, ham, quad), pain, stiffness, and a weird feeling that sometimes it was coming out of the socket.

At first squats were hard and painful and I tried to do some different isolation exercises that I thought would help. These really did nothing but take up time and actually made things worse.

I discovered that with good squat form the hip didn't hurt as much and every session felt better. Anyway to sum it up after a year both sides of my bum (sorry no pics) and legs are the same size, there is no pain while squatting, way less stiffness, and the out of socket feeling is gone.

I ran sprints in the Senior Olympics at the end of last summer and plan to be faster this year.

This is the way to get older!

Thanks again everyone.
