King wrote shawshank redemption under his regular name. It was part of "Different Seasons" (which also contained "The Body", which became the film "Stand by Me")

What's the reason for you not watching "prison movies"?

I don't like prisons. I like cowboys, outer space, swords, and scary movies.

My all-time favourite John Ford movie, "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (1962).

Does it take place in a prison? Are the characters in the movie prisoners? I do not enjoy watching prisoners in prison, any more than I like going to the zoo. At least 2001 has a spaceship.

Most of it takes place in a prison, but it's a fantastic story, and Stephen King's genius and humanity shines through in the form of Andy Dufresne's character (played by Tim Robbins). And Morgan Freeman is wonderful in it.

It's a movie I make a habit of watching every several years, and I find it good rehab for the soul.

You want a movie that begins and ends in a prison?

Point Blank with Lee Marvin. He prefigured Dirty Harry and his .44 magnum in San Francisco by some several years.
