I understand boys can't really start packing on muscle until they get old enough for the testosterone to start flowing. What happens at Tanner IV to girls' bodies that makes training be effective? (Not being a wiseass; I've got an 11-year-old daughter who has expressed some interest in joining me at the gym).

Testosterone affects women too, although not to the obvious extent it does males. Bottom line: rapid growth starts at puberty, and recovery from training is facilitated by growth processes.
