    Jordan,

My first meet is Aug 22nd and while I’d like to just have fun I am a terribly competitive person and see no reason not to make the most of it. That being said, I’m walking around at 188 (first thing in am) and believe that I would be far more competitive in the 183.5 class (USAPL meet). I’m at or around 20% BF so I have some to loose, currently consuming 210/350/80 which has me maintaining weight (this includes a nightly 16 oz. IPA).

I am confident that I can manipulate macros to drop 1 lb per week for 3 weeks then try to level out for a week, but with a 2 hour weigh I am skeptical that is enough. After scouring the forum and net for solutions, I’m not 100% sold on other methods of cutting weight for a meet. What are your thoughts on the effectiveness of: water, sodium and glycogen manipulation for a 2 hour weigh in?

If I cut to 185, can these methods get me safely under 183.5 for the meet?

    M/36/188/67”

    Thanks,
    Scott

What are your lifts going to be at the meet?

    Something along these lines:

    Squat
    358/408/430
    In kg: 163/185.5/195.5

    Bench
    237.5/275/285
    In kg:108/125/129.5

    Dead Lift
    352/390/408
    In kg:160/177.5/185.5

I will admit that I posted a similar discussion in the Training forum and some much more experienced guys have me mostly convinced that not cutting for my first meet is the way to go.

So I think being 188 and trying to get to 181 is not too big of a drop. However, I do think that the risks outweigh the benefits for a lifter doing their first meet who is also not going to put up super competitive numbers. I don't mean that to be a jerk- as I do think your numbers are respectable, I just don't think there needs to be much consideration given to what weight class a person should be until they're competitive. Similarly, I don't think cutting weight is advisable for a non competitive lifter unless weight loss is their primary goal and a meet is just a means to an end for motivation/fun.
