I'd be fatter for a year 10/10 times to get strong quickly instead of putzing around at 180 working on my sets at 275.
How heavy did you get, out of curiosity? I've been gaining weight slowly for about 16 months and am currently 193 at 21% bf (navy method). I was planning to cut in the Spring based on the idea that for muscle gain it's beneficial to alternate periods of hypo- and hyper caloric intake. Do you think that's true?

Whoa! Do you mind providing a bit more detail (starting and ending weight and lifts, etc.). I imagine a large part of your readership is curious.

Or go the Vince Gironda method...10 oz. drink, half cream, half ginger ale. It's actually really damn good--especially if the cream is vanilla flavored.

I got up to 215 ish I believe.

I think it depends where the lifter is in there training more so than any restricted time frame you know?

I started at 183 in Feb 2013, weighed 198 July 2013, and by Oct 2014 I had gotten up to ~210 (after being closer to 215 for a bit). My lifts went like (all at meets):

    Feb 2013 Arnold Classic @ 83kg- 451/330/528

    July 2013 USAPL Raw Nats @ 90kg - 500/352/622

Oct 2013 @198lbs (205 prior to weight cut) Local meet- 575/390/655

    Oct 2014 @ 198lbs (210 prior to weight cut) local meet- 640/430/725

I'd link it but I don't know how on my phone. If you just search youtube for John Meadows Dave Tate weight gain it's right there on top. It's worth watching just for the entertainment value.

Those are some crazy numbers. You must be in some kind of top 10 list for 198'ers.

In America, yes. As far as all time totals go, I just got bumped from the top 20.
