So he considers LP to be "arbitrary"?
It is strange, because 2.5-5kg jumps is predetermined in his example, so that's not arbitrary. However, the decision to switch from 5kg to 2.5kg based on when you think or feel like you'll slow down or stall is arbitrary. Then again, predetermining the weight drop based on feel and performance (i.e. setting 2.5kg as a hard number for dropping weight) is not arbitrary.
I'm finding that too many people conflate RPE training with the old school Tuchscherer fatigue drops, repeats, etc.
You can easily do 4x4@8 instead of the whole workup to x4@9 and then load drop deal. It's less complicated and really effective.
How do we address purism in a world that maximal effort training and submaximal volume may work well together?
Arbritrary or not, load and rep goals are still pushed even when RPE is supposed to be regulating the effort, it is just a tool not a system. The need to meet the overload principle does not stop when you autoregulate or make a plan to train submaximally.
Having arbritary load rep and set goals from time to time is a way to push beyond what you would normally allow. But you cannot live off of that full time.
