I also had 4.5 hours of "cardio" today. I umpire fastpitch softball. I'm shooting for 4500 calories today. OM NOM NOM NOM

    1/28/2015:

    Start time 135 pm

    1 mile run (9:22)
Holy shit this almost killed me and ruined the workout. I did not realize I was pressing the pace so hard and had a coughing fit leading to puking. I will need to use something to slow my pace down. Also, I have to remember to stay away from milk before exercise. Makes me blow chunks everytime.

    Squats:
    45 x 5
    95 x 5
    135 x 3
    145 x 2
    185 x 5 x 3

    Bench Press:
    45 x 5
    75 x 5
    95 x 3
    135 x 2
    145 x 5 x 3

    Deads:
    135 x 5
    165 x 3
    195 x 2
    225 x 5 x 1

    Chins, to failure: 1
    Jumping negatives: 3

    End time: 245 pm

No more 10 lb jumps for bench, and maybe squats. This was the first not-fun workout. I have a feeling I am going to be sore.

    1/31/2015:

    Start time 1255 pm

    Squats:
    45 x 5
    85 x 5
    135 x 3
    175 x 2
    195 x 5 x 3

    Press:
    45 x 5
    65 x 5
    95 x 3
    105 x 2
    110 x 5 x 3 PR

    Deads:
    135 x 5
    165 x 3
    225 x 2
    235 x 5 x 1

    Chins, to failure: 2
Jumping negatives: 3 (I made it the full 10-second count on the first one.)

    End time: 225 pm

Notes: I will start power cleans Monday. I need to figure out how to grip it properly since I have long forearms and can't rack for shit. All lifts are 5 lb max jumps going forward. Started squatting in the power rack with the safeties, too.

    January GainzZz:
    Squat: + 100 lb (95 --> 195), 105% gain
    Bench: + 50 lb (95 --> 145), 53% gain
    Press: + 35 lb (80 --> 115), 44% gain
    Deadlift: + 120 lb (115 --> 235), 104% gain

Thus ends Month #1 of Starting Strength.

    2/2/2015:

    Start time 320 pm

    Squats:
    45 x 5
    95 x 5
    135 x 3
    195 x 2
    200 x 5 x 3

    Bench Press:
    45 x 5
    75 x 5
    95 x 3
    140 x 2
    150 x 5 x 3

    Power cleans (first workout):
    Starting from empty bar...
    Many, many empty bar reps...
    55 x 3 x 1
75 x 3 x 2+ (shit form, failed a few reps on the pull here and there)
    65 x 3 x 2 (ran out of time)
    Absolute train wreck....

Chins, to failure: 2 (So close to 3; I think I pussed out when it got hard at the top)
    Jumping negatives (10-sec hang): 3

    End time: 435 pm

Notes: 200# squat felt lighter on the back than 195# work sets last time. Bench felt good. Cleans....need more practice. I hit one super solid rep with 65 lbs and almost accidentally threw the bar over my head. The rest sucked. Every phase of this lift except the squeeze off the floor needs attention. I need to burn the mechanics into muscle memory. Staying at 65 lbs next workout. Shoulder flexibility has improved. No cramps squatting, and I was able to take a narrower grip on my work sets.

Edit: Going to save a little money and get these when I get serious about cleans: http://bumperplates.com/bumper-plate...lbs-black.html I have the Econo 45's for deadlifting and they are awesome.

    2/4/2015:

    Start time 1235 pm

    Squats:
    45 x 5
    85 x 5
    135 x 3
    195 x 2
    205 x 5 x 3

    Press:
    45 x 5
    65 x 5
    95 x 3
    105 x 2
    115 x 5 x 3 PR

    Deads:
    135 x 5
    165 x 5
    195 x 3
    225 x 2
    245 x 5 x 1

    Chins, to failure: 2
    Jumping negatives (10-sec hang): 3

    End time: 135 pm

Notes: I have a major sticking point in chins where my elbows reach a 90-degree angle. I can't pull myself any higher after 2, and on the negatives, I can't hold myself up there. Where is the weakness? Is it my back or my biceps? I tried mentally forcing my elbows "down" using my back and pulling the bar to the ground to no avail. Once I hit 90 degrees, I can hold that hang for a long time. Squats once again felt lighter on the back than the previous workout. My legs, however, noticed the difference. Next workout I need to pay careful attention to form, though. No issues pressing although my bum right shoulder is starting to show off: the left side goes up quicker and easier. Consciously anticipating the shrug at lockout helps. Deadlifts are now heavy enough that I can use a mental "power!!" cue on the pull and it comes up slow enough to control. I'm not sure where I picked up this tip, but engaging my lats at the bottom to squeeze "all but 5 lbs of the lift" before I pull really helps. Still OH grip. Tried hook grip again; wanted to cry at 195#. I'm getting some nice calluses on my middle and ring fingers.

    Bench Press:
    45 x 5
    75 x 5
    105 x 3

Notes: Cleans were better. Chins still suck. Forearms are killing me from negatives already.

    Background:
Average joe, dad of three, used to be a competitive runner in high school. I'm a big fan of fitness and nutrition, but I have three failings: (1) I am possibly the laziest person on the planet; (2) I love eating until I hate myself (Louis CK); (3) I love my beer and hard cider (the 6x daily 12 oz curls).
In case anyone actually reads this thread, and noticed my bodyweight has dropped: I have abstained from alcohol since the Super Bowl. God I miss cider, but I figured the best way to get rid of a beer belly was to get rid of the beer, then the belly.
