If you made it through the whole gallon, i doubt you are lactose intolerant.

i think the body can only produce a certain amount of lactase at a time and the belly aches are from the over abundance of lactose overcoming lactase "reserves". the topic of lactase production being adaptable has not reached a clear verdict that i know of.

welcome to drinking the shit outta milk. the lactase will help on bloat but not on the rank emissions you may experience.

Lactaid whole milk worked for me. A bit pricy though.

When I jumped full force into a gallon a day after not drinking any milk on a 7 month deployment, I got some serious upper respiratory issues (could have been from the multi-stop travel on the way home, but I doubt the milk splurge helped) and I started shitting cheese logs... I'm a big fan now of slowly ramping up. Also, raw milk gives me less of a problem than regular milk, but I can't be sure if it's the pastuerization, the homogenization or the grass-fed vs. grain fed issue, since I can't find the different variants necessary to be sure. But, I don't want to start another raw milk discussion because so many people are so sensitive about it; don't do it if you're not comfortable with it, it just worked better for me (although it's fucking expensive here...).

Yeah, you kind of have to work up to a gallon over at least a couple days. I find one tab of Lactaid per pint works very well, but you'll have to experiment to see what works for you. Many people would have a problem with the sudden transition to a whole gallon.

And it doesn't come in gallon jugs...1/2 gal and 3/4 gal only. I just grab 3 3/4 gals at a time

Don't start drinking a gallon of milk a day without giving yourself time to get used to it. Here's something significantly more sane to try:

Week 1 - drink 1/4 gallon per day.
Week 2 - drink 1/2 gallon per day.
Week 3 - drink 3/4 gallon per day.
Week 4 - the whole enchilda

You could potentially stretch this out for 6 or 8 weeks, if need be.

Also, spread the milk throughout the day. A quarter of a gallon is 4 US cups. Drink one cup at every meal to start. You may also find that you do not need a full gallon during this process, too.
