This was once emphatically true, but I get the feel of excitement among the GOP now. I think Romney learned that the short time span of Newt's popularity coindided with Newt's aggressive campaigning, and when he bacame old Newt again and discussed the issues, people remembered why they didn't like him. I have no guess whether Romney's strategy is a winning one, but the troops seem to be enthuised again.

More them are becoming moreso. There are a few holdouts who can't cotton to the Mormon thing, but way more and a broader appeal than McCain ever managed, even when he got the boost from Palin. Much less of a nose holding factor than 2008.

Of course this all begs the question of why put this in the Primaries thread? It isn't like there's a race any more.

Well, the Primaries aren't over till a VP candidate is chosen methinks.

Who's that gonna be? MEH had Romney nailed from day one as the one who was gonna top the ticket.

Good point there. The convention still has to formalize it. I stand corrected.

Hell, I thought it was gonna be the Romster last time. So much for my inerrancy. The VP? Man, talk about a riddle wrapped in an enigma. I have no clue. I'd like it to be Rubio or Ryan. Ryan might assure a swing state, and Rubio could draw some of the hispanic vote and clinch a lot of Electoral votes from the land of large insects and reptiles. Christy, on the other hand could bring some real fire and megatonnage (heh-heh) to the ticket, but a candidate and VP both from the East Coast? Unlikely.

I want to go on record that I just assumed Ryan would be his running mate. McCain tried to be cute and it bit him in the ass; Mitt might as well go balls-in with what he wants to disassemble.

There are other contenders, yes.... But none that look like they should be peddling their "repeal the 20th century" rhetoric at their summer job at a movie theater.

I will, of course, be spending my time during the election praying that [Jessica Dolan] makes another porno.

Romney is the candidate as MEH had predicted from the beginning.

    Remember these guys and gals?

    Bachman
    Palin
    Santorum
    Gingrich
    Paul
    Perry
    Trump
    Cain
    Pawlenty
    Daniels
    and others I can't remember...

In the end, Romney simply had more money and was able to out-negative and out-last all of his opponents, even though no one ever particularly liked him.

    Congrats!

I've been mostly staying out of these threads. It appears that once again we have imperfect candidates from all of the parties to choose from. I guess for me it comes down to who I think is competent as an executive and has a grasp on how to grow the economy. The choice can seem pretty clear if you decide what is important to you. The rest is noise.
Put another way, pick the set of problems you think you could live with:

College kids having to find their own contraceptives?
A neighborhood where every other house is vacant or the occupants unemployed?

(that's just a start from an admittedly biased point of view, but it would be interesting for people to list what they think they could and couldn't live with or without).

That ugliness at the RNC was some real bullshit.

Also Jessica needs to update her gallery more often. I need to see more dogs and cookies.

I remember the two weeks they had me second guessing my guess for his VP.

Please don't forget about Huntsman, the Actually Good Mormon candidate: http://jon2012.com/.

I'm not sure I actually predicted Romney, but I certainly favored him over the others. But that said, it wouldn't have mattered who came out on top, because any of the people cited above would have been deemed loathsome shit piles by the Team Blue supporters here. Because they said so well before any clear front runner emerged.
Those other candidate's names are merely manifestations of a political view you despise. On a purely rational and logical basis of course. Because you are the enlightened ones. Us other "folk" are mere troglodytic mouth breathers.

I think that might've been me. bowdirk's assumption that he simply had more money and outlasted the others is kinda weak imo. That list includes a hole bunch of "no freakin' chance" individuals who simply didn't lack the broad-based appeal required to win the nomination, regardless of how popular they are in their individual locale or niche of the party.
