    Default The Joy of Reps.

Some of you are probably beyond strong enough that this is even relevant or interesting, but I was wondering how many reps you can do with bodyweight in all the main lifts?

    Squat, Deadlift or Bench Press

Loaded with your current bodyweight. How many reps?

I went to a bench press competition once and they did bench for reps @ BW and it was the most fun for everyone. If I recall people were topping out at around 30.

Never tried it for squat or deadlift (and never will) but I've pressed my bw of 200 for 3. For bench, a fraternity in college held a contest where everyone had to bench bw for reps. I got to go last and I just did 22 with 200 and quit because that was all I needed to win. I'd guess 25-30 for bench.

    Deadlift
I did a set of 50 BW deadlifts as part of a crossfit workout. Terrible idea, wrecked me for about two weeks. Fucking crossfit. I'll never do that again.

I haven't tested these directly, but I've done back-off sets of 8 in squats with 50 lbs more than bodyweight, and that wasn't a max effort set or anything, so I assume I could do lots of these for both squats and deadlifts. Bench presses are another story, since I have a really weak bench. Right before Christmas, I did bodyweight for a double, then deloaded to start TM. Probably if I went into the gym and loaded up the bar with bodyweight right now, I could only do 1-3 reps.

I'm guessing I could hit mid 30 for bw on squats if i didn't train for the higher rep stuff and just did them. Not sure about DL and nothing impressive for bench maybe close to 20

Last year I tried 225 lbs (actually 102.5kg) for a challenge on http://70sbig.com and managed 21 squats, 10 bench presses and 23 deadlifts.

I weigh 95kg (209 lbs) and I'm a little stronger than I was then so I guess I can do maybe 25-30 squats and deadlifts and 12-14 bench presses with that weight. I'm not about to do it though. I hate doing more than 5 reps of anything.

My best attempts last year were 50 squats, 12 presses, 32 benches. Ive never done more than 20s on deadlift but I was at 400x20 (2xbw) before breaking my hand. If I had been in a better cardio condition when I tried a max bw press I probably could have done more. But that's a beast of a movement to rep heavy. I was repping 20 at about 172 at the time so 12 was a pretty good effort but the ability to breathe and cycle oxygen was more of a struggle than anything.

I've done a set of 19 squats with a hair over body weight (65kg, was 64ish at the time), after working sets, and set of 50 with half BW. Former was mostly a struggle to breathe as it was heavy enough to need a valsalva. Latter was boring and pointless.

When I was crossfitting I did 5 sets of bodyweight squats with each set being over 50 reps. My best set was 84 reps. That was my first set of the workout. I weighed 135lbs- that was late 2008.

That workout also included 5 sets of max bodyweight bench presses and 5 sets of max pull-ups.

I have done 40 reps of bodyweight bench press at a weight of 135lbs. Could probably get about the same now with a bodyweight of 148.

Never tried a deadlift max at bodyweight but have done 30 reps at 1.5 times bodyweight.
