Default Do you find that power cleans help your deadlift?

Just curious to see what some of the guys on this board think...Rippetoe obviously preaches them as vital, but I'm curious if other guys have either 1) noticed that they really help or 2) dropped/replaced them without any adverse consequences.

Not talking about while running SS, by the way...more along the lines of intermediate programming.

I think so. I am absolutely awful at cleaning. But still the fact you can train them regularly, and they reinforce excellent back control/positioning and use of traps and grip. Leaves me primed to deadlift even if I have not done them for a while.

If I try to train deadlifts regularly, it totally fucks up my ability to squat.

I like using them as deadlift warmups. Work up some triples, doubles and singles, then when it's too heavy to powerclean start deadlifting. Some old-school powerlifters did it that way too.

I don't know if they help my deadlift, because I've always done them, just because they're fun and feel badass. Really, no reason not to do powercleans.

There are exercises giving a better return of strength in relation to the amount of time, energy and number of repetitions put in.

I have not observed that power cleans helped my deadlift significantly.

They can be fun, but they haven't done anything for my deadlift.

i recently started doing them every second week at intensity day, and they helped my deadlift quite a bit the reason for this is that i can't deadlift in triples week by week now, cos it's getting to heavy on my body

Yes, they do. So do kettlebell swings, to give another option.

Doing fast hip hinges can help slow hip hinges.

Not indefinitely so, of course, but certainly for novices.
