oh so you'll refer to any point in time for yourself, but for me only currently matters... ok buddy -- good job being stronger than a half-cripple

the jumping backwards is not relevant to his elbows

    you're dumb dude

but i'm dumber for arguing with an idiot

The jumping backwards is relevant to the distance the bar is from his body, which you were blaming on his elbows.

the distance from his body would have been less than it was with his incorrect elbow positioning and movement

Actually, no. The bar wasn't being pulled with the arms, so the only way that could happen is if he had pushed the bar forward as his forearms became parallel. If you weren't blind, you'd see the arms didn't alter the path anymore that it was moving off of his thighs.

Or, you know, one could understand that someone who is a regular coach at Rip's seminars as well as having his own clients at home coaches hundreds of lifters to a correct power clean every year. So he has a better eye than you for what this lifter needs to do, as well as a better sense of which cues will be productive and which will not.

You only know this because I told you that it was in the book.

And nobody is arguing with the general recommendation to turn the elbows out. We are simply noting that, in the OP's case, lack of that rotation is not his problem. So cueing that doesn't accomplish anything and, like the bizarre "upright row" cue, just makes him concentrate on his arms more, which A) he doesn't need to do and B) in novices leads to arm pulling, a serious problem which he currently does not exhibit and which he should try to avoid developing through listening to your weird-ass cues. What makes you think a novice even knows what a "correct" upright row looks like, anyway?

mstrofbass is right--the issue is that he's too far behind the bar. I agree with TomC that the best way to fix that, the simplest cue that usually takes care of this, is to have the lifter touch his thigh at the jump. I will also add that the OP may also benefit from putting a little bit more weight on the bar.

I realize it must be galling to you that someone of Rip's proven experience and expertise can admit that he's wrong while you, a Random Internet Blowhard, do not seem to possess this ability. It explains a lot about why you fail to learn.

maybe you can't read, which would explain a lot

but tom said to ignore my advice, especially the upright row part

that means he was telling the poster to ignore rotating his elbows, which is what Rip teaches

Are you autistic? Because you are so literal that it makes you stupid. Actually, scratch that--it's insulting to people who actually have some form of autism.

He was telling him to ignore the upright row part because it's a shitty cue that is open to misinterpretation by new lifters.

And when you cue someone to do something that they're already doing to satisfaction, you cause them to overcompensate into error. This is the issue with your "rotate your elbows" cue.

Just give up. Or not. Either way, I think the OP has a good idea by now that you like to talk out your ass and have an estimation of your coaching abilities that far exceeds your actual skills and knowledge.

I'm sure this will make a compelling case to the OP for your qualifications as a coach.

I find it funny that you seem to have season passes to our assholes, and the only thing you seem to like more than engaging with our assholes is whining about them.
