Thread: Power cleaning twice a week?

  1. #1

Default Power cleaning twice a week?

I'm on Starting Strength, going to go on advanced novice next week.
What do you guys think about power cleaning Tuesday/Saturday and deadlifting Thursday?

I believe my power clean is too easy at its current weight (135) when compared to my deadlift. (325) It feels very easy, not that heavy. I'm naturally very explosive, which suggests to me that I can go quite a bit higher on the power cleans. However, taking 10lb jumps instead of 5lb jumps probably isn't the right way to bring it up to par.

How about twice a week for a while? Thoughts?

Why not 10 lb per week? So long as technique is good, that is...
If you can do a triple with good form at, say, 185, why would you do your work sets at only 140?

I began to introduce power cleans about 5 weeks into my lifting, though I had some weightlifting experience from my prior three years of rowing training.
At the moment my A and B days are:

    A:
    3x5 squats
    3x5 bench/press (alternating)
3xfailure chins (still on negatives - some day...!)
    1x5 dead lift

    B:
    3x5 squats
    3x5 press/bench press
    3xfailure pullups
    1x5 power cleans

Standard SS AxBxAxx format. I think it's working pretty well for me.

just power clean once a week at the beginning

make 10lb jumps if it's too easy, otherwise try for 5lb jumps

2x a week is going to start interfering with deadlift in the near future

If you are on SS then you can also PC on first and third session and DL on second or something like that.

Right, that's really close to what's prescribed anyway when doing ABA BAB. It's just that for those two lifts you would always be ABA (or BAB, but you get it). Deadlifts usually have to go to 1x per week fairly early anyway.

I'd move my chinups to after my deadlifts and my pullups to after my cleans if I were you. Unless for some reason you want chinups/pullups to take precedence in your training, it seems foolish to put them before your heavy floor pulls (deadlifts/cleans).

This is exactly what I was suggesting in the first place. I'll take your response as an acknowledgement that this isn't a horrible idea.
