I was reading the blog of (bear with me here) the father of a musician whose husband I am semi-friends with, and he's a splendid example of an East-Coast liberal elite archetype. Academic, thinks people who carry guns are crazy, etc. I attempted to engage him on the matter of concealed carry, because (generally speaking) people who carry aren't a bunch of lunatics, bad people, or anything like that. They're just culturally different from him. Obviously. He wasn't having it, though. Sadface.

Personally, I don't know that I'd carry, though I'd like to learn to shoot (and own) both handguns and long guns. Useful skill set to have, but the wife is very anti-gun from some bad experiences as a kid. Also, I don't have the money for it. So, not so much an issue!

I'm so relieved at your hands-off government policies right now...
    Beautiful. Just beautiful!

For a second, I thought you were talking about yourself (giggling madly).

When you get out here I'll teach you. And we can teach your wife she should be no more frightened by an inanimate object such as a gun as by another more dangerous inanimate object, a vehicle.

If your wife is at all open to the idea of firearms, look into the Appleseed project, they look like a really good program for basic rifle training, and a 22 rifle is about as "inoffensive" as a gun gets for a typical non-shooter. My wife was very happy to get a Ruger 10/22 for her birthday this year.

Sadly, here in NY, getting a concealed carry permit requires a divine act (or at least knowing the right people at police headquarters). I keep meaning to go get my pistol permit (home and range only), but for target shooting, I've always been much more a fan of rifles than pistols.

yeah, I'd definitely like to carry inside the waistband, because there is too much of the year where I wouldn't be wearing a jacket to be able to conceal elsewhere, given the climate

I am curious, if you carry a gun and you then kill a person. What are the legal consequences?

Depends entirely on the state laws and the circumstances of the shooting.

Corrie's comment still applies. To take the matter further not only the state plays into it but even the county or city it happens in depending on the laws, tolerance, temper of the prosecutor, and the media account and possible furor over what happened. The Travon Martin and Zimmerman case in Florida is one such example. It's impossible to make broad and general pronouncements about the consequences because of the very heterogeneous nature of how criminal justice is administered in the US because of Federalism.

The same circumstances involving a self defense shooting and concealed carry in Boise, Idaho would almost certainly be upheld where in LA it would be very dicey indeed for the shooter. Unless they are an entertainment star or liberal politician. Then the chances of it being upheld get better for the shooter given the caprices of the local prosecutors, judges, and juries. Oh, and the media. To wit I cite the Menendez brothers, OJ Simpson and Robert Blake as prime examples of "justice" gone awry.

There are several good books on this topic, due to the complexities listed by others. Before I started medical school I carried a Para Ordnance P10 in a DeSantis IWB holster. I recently got a CrossBreed shirt tucker but I cannot carry at school so I don't know how well it wears yet.
