Default Just bougth Exercise Physiology: Human Bioenergetics and Its Applications

Just ordered a used copy of the first version of the book published in 1984. I considered the new one for about three seconds (long enough to blink a few times at the $140 pricetag) before buying the old one for $3 bucks.

Being an ignorant dumb ass I figer there's enough learnin' to be done with the first book but I still wanted to ask; are there any major chunks on the book that has been overcome by more up to date understandings of physiology?

This is the best Ex Phys text there is. One of the reasons this is so well regarded is that George Brooks is the preeminant guy in lactic acid metabolism and so this book covers that with a detail and accuracy that makes all other texts not just too simplified, but wrong. However, 1984 is old and a lot of Brooks' work post date this publication. I have the third edition (1999) and the difference between that and the 4th (current) is more cosmetic, and you can used versions of that edition for about $10 from Amazon.

I wish I knew, but it was just $3 plus shipping. I'll probably going to order the 3rd edition.

Is it a hard read? This is not my field, I'm just a curious bystander.

It's not an easy read. I'll put it that way. It's a university-level physiology text.

It's worth the effort. And I'll take this opportunity to thank Limie, who first turned me on to this book many moons ago.

I own the 4th edition (as was required for a number of my courses in undergrad), it's not the easiest read but if you have some physiology background you can piece it together. It's a great book nonetheless.
