Thread: How is my bench so low?

    Default How is my bench so low?

    Is form really that much of a barrier? I've read the book and watched videos of Rip explaining the lift, yet i still have the bench of a 9th grader (and how good is a ninth grader's form?). My squats, deadlifts and cleans have been progressing well, but my bench and press suck.

    What's the deal?

    You forgot to include any actual information in your post. Like your lifts or a video. How would anyone know?

    230 lbs -> 247 lbs
    Squat: 50 -> 160
    Bench: 50-> 90 lbs (Has always been weak for me. Had to reset and check form twice)
    Deadlift: 65 -> 225
    Press: 40 -> 75
    Clean: 65 -> 105

    I'm basically on a see-food diet, as shown by the +17 lbs of body weight. The thing I've struggled with most is eating, and I am now considering lowering my carbs a bit as Rippetoe mentions in the "A Clarification" article.
    Yeah, you're probably well over the 20% bf guideline for when to start slowing down w/ the calories... like... 30%.. so clean up them there carbs.

    What do you mean you had to reset ? Did you really not finish the reps 3 workouts in a row at a given weight? Are you injured ? 2 months at 5lbs a workout would only be 60lbs for the BP anyway so 40lbs isn't totally off the map but it is pretty early to stall.

    I'd post a form check asap if you can. For someone of your height and weight stalling at 90lbs suggests something is majorly wrong. I'm 5'5 and have struggled with bench and press more than anything but 90 is a really low point to stall at, I breezed by 90 like it was nothing.
