Thread: What should my workout program be like?

  1. #1

Default What should my workout program be like?

I'm 5'9, 165lb, going to be a junior in high school, playing football for the first time (runningback & DB/linebacker) and I've been on Starting Strength since February. I got very good form on everything, but no lifts went up like it should (5lb a workout) except for deadlifts, no matter how good I eat/sleep. I eat about 3000 cals/190g protein a day, lots of good protein from meat, fish, and other good foods, so my diet can't be holding me back, as well as sleep since I get at least 9 hours a night. I just think SS isn't for me.

    Current lifts:

    Deads: 245lb 1x5
    Bench: 100lb 3x5
    Squat: 155lb 3x5
    DB Rows: 50lb DBs 3x5
    Overhead Press: 75lb 3x5

I'm willing to add to my diet or do anything differently to succeed on a workout plan. Looking to get stronger and build mass. Thanks

SS is great for you. Why do you think it isn't?

And 3000 calories isn't that much ,it may in fact be your diet that is holding you back.

Then do what it takes to do SS. Something is off, probably your form or your eating, most likely both.
Take the time to get form checks done and figure out your diet and do SS as it's written.

I made the mistake of eating 3,000 calories a day when I first started and it didn't end well. I get somewhere between 3,500 and 4,000 now and my lifts have progressed well with form being the only thing holding some of them back. You might want to read Mark's 'Clarification' article while you're at it.

Are you sure your form is dialed in? If you have access to a video camera try posting some videos in the technique thread, but read the sticky there for guides on how to film it. Better yet, if you're in an area with a SS coach try to get in touch with them.

How are your lifts failing ? i.e. what happens when you go into the gym and try to squat 3x5x160 ?

I can't do the lifts when I add 5lb the next session, plain and simple. Same with bench. I can have good form and eat great and the next workout I will fail. Not sometimes, always. Deadlifts are great for me though. Go up 5lb every session with no problem.

How much weight will I gain a week eating 3500-4000 calories a day?

That's impossible to answer. You've got at least 30lbs to gain anyways, and if you eat 3500 while your lifts improve, you won't get close to fat.

So upping by 500 calories will really make a big difference? I don't want to surpass 180lb.

Your form obviously is not perfect or you would be squatting more than 150lb. If you're failing before your bodyweight there is a significant chance your form is bad. Post form checks.

If your weight has stalled, then yes 500 calories per day extra will make a difference.
