When I drop the bar and catch it at the bottom, it feels like the weight is trying to pull my shoulders/arms out of socket? Is that how its supposed to feel?

Also don't just let it go right to the length of your arms before you start to slow it down.
I pop it off my shoulder and turn my hands downwards right away so that I can slow it down as it descends. Like the down portion of an upright row.
Couple of vids on how to lower the weight like a boss:

The arms do a bit of deceleration as they unbend, with the thighs catching the rest.
Not that I am anywhere close to this level but I would think dropping a couple hundred pounds on your thighs would hurt alot.
Anyway, thanks guys. I will try and take more of the impact on my legs.
