    Default Nick's Training Log

I've been a lurker for a couple months now, figured I'd post a training log.

    About me:
I'm 30 (almost 31), 6'2" currently 273 as of this morning, used to lift a lot during football in high school but that was about 13 years ago. Hadn't done any lifting at all since then when it came to "the big 3" (SQ, BN, PC). I'd dabbled with p90x a few times and just done bands. A few years ago, I got up to around 330 lbs and decided I didn't want to be a fat ass anymore (or as fat anyway). I'd dropped about 30 lbs of that by the beginning of this year and started running around march of this year to drop another 20 or so.

Funny thing about that, I don't really enjoy running, so I joined a gym to do barbell training. I started out doing strong lifts because I came across the site and it was free, but soon after bought SS for my kindle and switched to that.

    Starting Weights 6/16/12
    SQ 135 5x5
    BN 135 5x5
    DL 135 1x5
    OP 65 5x5
    Row 95 5x5

This is my most recent and I'll update from here
    Workout 8/14/12
    SQ 325 3x5
    BN 190 3x5
PC 170 3x3, 6x1 (this was killing me form wise, thinking about dropping down 15 lbs or so to just work on form)

    Goals (Current 5RM)
    SQ 500 (325)
    BN 300 (190)
    PC 225 (170)
    OP 225 (130)
    DL 500 (305)

Tonight's workout kinda sucked, squats were planned 3x5 at 330, ended up doing two sets and dropping down to 225 for 10. Had a friend record the second 330 set to check form (first time I'd done that). Looks like I need about another 3 or 4 inches to get a little below parallel to me.

    Here's a link http://static.photobucket.com/player...-13-49_912.mp4

Overhead press sucked too, also supposed to be 3x5 with 135, I'd say i got 4x3x3, the rest were a lot of ass pushing those up. Next time i'll try these again also.

Deads were fine, got my 310 x 5, did the first one of those and all my warm ups all with a hook grip to try to get used to it, but my thumbs were killing me by that point so i switched to mixed.

All in all a shitty feeling evening since I'm feeling like I hit my first real snags, squat obviously bothering me the most as I feel like I can do A2G with 225 but throw that extra plate on there and I tense up or something.

I need to drink a shake or something before I lift too, I just felt so dead today.

I did the same thing on my squats. Amazing what you see on video. A preworkout shake helps, but I've accidentally drank too much preworkout things before and trust me lifting while feeling bloated and waterlogged sucks a lot too. Make sure you mix with water and not milk or it makes it exponentially more heavy feeling, unless you need the carb/sugar.

Don't think my log shows it but I started lifting on 5/29/2012 and started with just 67 pounds on everything, so biting the pride bullet to get that squat right isn't too big a deal, it makes a huge different in the long run at last for me it did. I knew I could probably have started at more like 225 on squat and 300 DL but I wanted to train form and just added more each week then normal SS says to. Good luck with your lifting brother and I'll keep checking your thread here!!

    Felt a lot better today

    Squat
    330x3x5
Changed up my stance a bit, consciously tried to look down the whole time (still couldn't, but better)

    Bench 195x3x5
These were fine, still need to get that arch going though

    Power clean
    160x5x3
Dropped 15 lbs off to work on form, will work on 5 lb LP from here

    Barbell Row
    135x3x5
    For shits

Went up to the gym with my wife tonight and figured I'd try out some of those assistance exercises in the book

    Stiff legged goodmorning
    45 3x5
    65 1x5
    85 2x5

    Romanian DL
    45 1x10
    135 2x10

    Sumo DL
    135 2x10

After that I ran three separate 1/4 miles with a 1/4 mile walk in between, back was feeling really tight so I just stopped after that.

Hard to stay out off the weights now isnt it LoL :-)
I find that my lower back tightens up really fast and seems to wear out doing things like moving boxes and stuff unless I rest for 2 days after heavy sessions. Its never been bad during actual training, but moving lots of light things seems to make it feel worn. I have a cheap shiatzu massage chair thing that goes over my computer chair that really really helps massage the erectors and upper/lower back. I havent tried any of the assistance exercises in the book as of yet. Im too fat to do chins yet LoL, i have to figure out something. Hows the sumo feel? ive never tried it. Great job on the 330 squats, i know unlearning looking up is a hard thing, but the change for your hip drive is amazing. Do you have the SS DvD?? Its a good investment. Seeing Rip actually teach the movements really helped me lock down my technique, which i think i have down pretty well. Keep going bud and get them PRs!

yeah i still can't do chins, my pull up bar at the house is too low (oh yeah and the too fat thing)

goodmornings were a pretty decent lift i thought, the bar weights coming down on my neck like that felt weird though, sumo's were good, they definitely require less in terms of upward pull, but it's a different set of muscles as you can't really extend your legs much and it's mainly all lower back (unless i did them wrong which is highly likely) i think i'll stick with conventional though

all time PRs (1RM) for me are 415 SQ, 270 BN, 200 PC, i never did press or DL in high school so every time i do one of those it's like PR day
