Seriously! I know when I went to the academy they taught us that if there's ever a mob coming at us with machetes, we are to holster our guns and only combat them with a sword or knife or something equivalent.

There would have probably been some beatdowns handed out to my fellow officers who backed up and continued firing with me in their field of fire. But yes, deadly force appears to be justified in that situation. If people get close enough with edged weapons, they can fuck you up before you have a chance to fire. Means, opportunity, and intent all present.

I know nothing about the topic, but it crossed my mind when the side with guns got scattered that it was either discipline or luck that nobody got shot accidentally in the back.
