    Default Cheap on bumper plates

    If I build a platform,
Is it possible to just buy a pair of 45lbs bumper wheels and load the rest with iron plates? (the diameter of iron plates are smaller than the bumpers)
Will it cause tear/wear to the bumpers?

    I believe the answers are:

    Yes, Yes.

But if it is your equipment you can be more careful and possibly minimize the added stress.

    How?
I want that setup for high pulls and power cleans (and maybe some snatching later...)
Will buy and add another pair of 45s when I exceed 200lbs.

    So will it work okay?
What do you mean by if it's my own equipment (yes it is, I have a basement gym) I can be more careful to reduce the tear/wear?

    SIDE QUESTION:
The barbell I use is not "Olympic", it is one of those cheap bars that will bend easily.
Will it bend if I drop it on the platform evenly? (loaded with bumpers)

I would keep the collars on very tight so there is very little play between the bumper and the iron. If you can move the plates around from side to side this would increase friction and the likelihood of damage. I would minimize the use of the bumpers to strictly Olympic work so the added weight is smaller. I would still try to treat the bars as though they were loaded only with iron as much as possible - IE not just dropping it from the top every rep if you can avoid it. Bring the weight to your thighs and then lower it controlled to minimize the weight bouncing around. The reason they will have more wear is because only part of the weight on the bar (the bumper) is soaking up the force of the entire bar weight. The less extra force applied through momentum and careless throwing around, the better.

This isn't something you can just know for sure how well it will work without doing it, but if you treat your personal equipment better than most people do at a community gym they should last OK while you save up for more.
