I had an old pair of do-wins I wanted to try removing the heel on, but the cobbler said it wouldn't work, because the part of the shoe the layer of the shoe that goes over the heel and attaches to the sole is longer than the sole. He said you'd be left with a hump somewhere.

It made sense to me. How'd your cobbler rectify this?

I'm not sure I understand what your cobbler is saying. My cobbler peeled the crepe (in the direction from the heel to to the toe) and removed all material between the crepe and shoe boot so that the crepe was reattached flush to the base of the shoe boot.
