    Yeah, the ones you had on looked like athletic flats to me. If their sole is hard, that's excellent, but the extra heel of a lifting shoe (usually .5 - .75") is what'll help encourage a little deeper squat. Rogue fitness has a good selection if your're somewhere in North America.

    Beware some "lifting shoes" out there. The soles are not solid because they're marketed for CrossFit. I assume so you can run 1600m after dead lifting 135 lbs x 75.

    There are already a lot of guides for making a plywood lifting platform, but horse stall mats are amazing for the cost.

    The shoes I have are from new balance, and the soles feel real solid. Certainly wouldn't want to run in them. Have thought about making a platform, but will likely remove carpet and work off concrete for now.
