I'm sorry, but I cannot explain the separate functions of your lungs, stomach, and diaphragm on a board post. You do not burp from your lungs.
I'm getting back into lifting after not doing it for a couple of years. One problem I'm having that I don't recall having before is getting a lot of gas during big compound lifts. (So I can breathe during bench and ohp fine.) It doesn't hurt at all but it feels like my lungs are full of gas and I need to burp it out before taking a full breath. Which really screws with the rhythm of my breathing during the last reps of a set. Also the effect continues for a while afterwards so it's not just something I'm doing during the lifts.
Is this an unheard of problem people have with big lifts? The guy manning my gym looked at me like I was crazy.

Sounds to me like you're swallowing air instead of taking a deep breath. Gulping air into your stomach will cause you to want to belch. This isn't how you valsalva.........
I've had two trainees for whom deadlifts tended to make them burp between reps. However, as Rip pointed out, this didn't have to do with taking air into their lungs, at least not directly. My guess is that something with leaning over in the deads, coupled with the intra-abdominal pressure caused by the Valsalva made them burp.
I get this on deadlifts only and only with a belt. Sometimes to the point of belching with some stomach acid. My theory is that when I bend down with the tight belt it pinches part of the stomach and puts pressure towards the esophagus. I usually just power through it though sometimes I have to stand up and adjust my belt a little. If you are having that big of an issue, you may want to play with belt placement and tightness. I have never had this happen during squats...well I've had gas in the hole, but not in the form of a belch.
Sometimes squatting makes me need a poo.
I get this when I drink a protein shake right before lifting.
