Yeah, that's what it will be. Osteophyte chopped a hole in the tendon.

Assuming your diagnosis is correct, two questions:

Is there anything I could have done to prevent this?

    What's the solution?

    1. Not benched. But you didn't know.

    2. Mumford procedure and cuff tendon repair.

Ok. Scheduled to go over the MRI with the ortho on Tuesday, so I'll let you know what he says.

Looks like it's a complete tear of the supraspinatus tendon, from its attachment to the arm. Ortho said the tendon had been weakened due to an old injury, and that this tear wasn't caused by an osteophyte, just a cumulative kind of thing.

Treatment is arthroscopic surgery to reattach the tendon. He said while they're in there, they'll buff down any osteophytes they see.

I've got the procedure scheduled for 12/9. Ortho says I can't use my right arm at all for the following 2 weeks - it's got to be in a tight sling to let the tendon re-attachment heal. Then 2 weeks in a loose swing, 2 weeks of mobility work, and then maybe he'll clear me to hit the barbells again.

He sounds like a pretty progressive surgeon. Most of them like to let the shoulder freeze in place with 6 weeks of total immobility post-op.

Which does miraculous things for their prognosis for returning to their prior level of functioning.....

    I assume you're being facetious?

Seems like there's a tradeoff here between giving the tendon attachment maximum time to heal versus letting all the shoulder and arm musculature atrophy.

BTW, what's the game plan for after all this? Once I get cleared by the ortho, start with the bar and do a linear progression to get back to pre-op strength?

That's all been discussed before, Dave.
