Default Hip Pain on Squats - Part 3

    Hey Coaches,

I've been having persistent pain on my hip during squat sessions, as described on this thread and this thread. On my last post Tom asked me for a video from a rear oblique view, trying to get tighter, since I was shifting back on the way up. I apologize for the delay in getting the video, but the pain got to the point where I was limping, so I took some time off to let it heal, and now that thread is closed. Here is the requested video:

    Squat Rear Oblique

On other news, the doctor I was seeing for this told me to stop lifting for at least 3 months, so I went to see another doctor. This new doctor knew about the mechanics of the lifts (surprising) and told me that this kind of issue (trochanteric bursitis/tendinitis) could have been caused by trauma (I used to fall on my sides a lot on my kung fu classes) and turned chronic over time, although he did not rule out the squat mechanics being behind it and encouraged me to experiment with stance width if the pain persists.
Either way, the pain is gone after my layoff, so I want to clean my squat form completely to, at the very least, rule that out as the cause of pain, so a coach's feedback on the posted video is highly appreciated.

    Many thanks.

Your knees are traveling forward for the duration of the movement, which may be aggravating your hips, if the pain is near your rectus femoris origin. However, if it is bursitis, that kinda sucks. Wanna know what cures bursitis? I would like to know and so would everyone else. That can be a tough thing to shake, if it is what you have. Here is what I can tell you. Make your stance a little wider. Get your knees in place by half way down and don't let them go further forward thereafter. Get some lifting shoes. Otherwise, your squat looks pretty good.

Thanks for the feedback Tom. Since the first post I've been trying to find a way to import a pair of lifting shoes without paying an absurd amount of taxes (the joys of living in a socialist country) but, worst case scenario, I intend to take the trip to attend a seminar next year and get some good shoes in the process. I suspect they will fix a lot of issues.
Either way, I really appreciate you (and all the other coaches) taking the time to answer all theses posts.

I looked at your location after I suggested shoes again and realized they may not be as widely available in Brazil. I doubt the Olympics in Rio are going to bring an influx of lifting shoes into the country, either. Rio looks like it is 500 km away from you anyway. Whatever the case, best of luck. Hope to see you at a seminar at some point. Until then, we'll be here typing away.

Yeah, I'm not holding my breath. So far, the best deals I could find were buying them through international Amazon, but our lovely Customs House has the habit of either taxing imported products by ~90% of the product value or "misplacing" the product entirely. Good stuff.

After this, I couldn't not comment thanking you guys again; it baffles me that the Starting Strength Model is not more popular considering all the quality, free support given on these boards. Hell, you guys even take the time to answer blatant trolls, just so misinformation is not spread. That is awesome. So, thanks again for everything.

Glad we could be of help. Hopefully the word continues to spread.
