I am a 52 y/o 210# intermediate male. Current lifts:
Deadlift 500
Press 190
Squat 340
Bench 320
I have been using 4 day heavy/medium varients of the texas method, most recently Andy Baker's Strength and Mass After 50. Primarlity interested in getting stronger (especially my lagging squat), but would like some hypertrophy as well, particularly in the arms. Getting slow but steady results and managing recovery fairly well.
I just installed a power rack in my home and I only work 2-3 days per week so I now have the option of running a two a day program. My thoughts are that I could increase volume (3x5 has been managable, but 5x5 kicks my ass and diminishes my work output on follow-on lifts), or separate my lifts for better results..
So a upper body push volume day could look like this:
AM: Bench 5x5
PM: Press 5x5
Weighted Dips 3x10
Or I could separate my hypertrophy/assistance work like this:
AM: Bench 3x5
Press 3x5
PM: Weighted Dips 3x10
LTE 3x10
Or I could break up the volume over the day like this:
AM: Press 3x5
Bench 3x5
Weighted Dips 3x10
PM: Light Press 5x3
Light Bench 5x3
LTE 3x10
I know there are unlimited variants someone could come up with. I just want some rough guidance on how I could best--if at all---make a 2 a day work for me. Any comments would be appreciated.
I don't know that I would train twice a day, or do 5x5s on the pressing movements in the same day. Are you making progress with 3x5 for volume? If so, I would stay there and add curls and chins along with your LTEs if you want some extra arm work.
