What caught my attention was that the OP is in his forties and put the post in The Elderly section. My oldest son is in his mid-40's and I do not consider him elderly. Youngest is just 40 and a triathlete/marathoner in Denver and he is certainly not elderly. Guess I am an official geezer.
I don't consider myself elderly, it's just that this forum seems a good place for 40+.
You'll be better off starting conservative (at this age), have fun and enjoy the easiness of the first 3 or so weeks. It will help you gradually get comfortable with the hard work to come and help you stick with it.
Follow up question: Is it wise to increase calories as you get further into LP to aid recovery of the harder work?

My personal feeling is yes (with the usual caveats of starting from overfatness etc. that have been gone over endlessly on the forums) but to a lesser extent than a trainee in their twenties. I did decently adding 250 calories a day to the end of my LP.
