For me it's usual, painless and gets almost completely solved by the use of knee sleeves.
Hello,
First of all, thanks ever so much for the book and site. I don't think I'd have got very far without the detailed and thorough information available here.
I've noticed though that my knees make a fairly loud click every time I squat. I don't think it's crepitus, because it's always at the same point (around quarter squat depth) and both my legs do it. It happens whether or not I'm loaded, eg when I just sit down in a chair they make the noise. Just wondering if this is usual or if I should be concerned. I'm very keen to avoid hurting myself -- my main motivation for training is to build resistance to injury.
I've been following starting strength for about 2 months, I squat 85kg (187lb) and I'm in my mid-thirties.
Thanks for everything guys, this forum is great!

Mine use to do it a lot but they have stopped with squatting more.
In my 40s with cranky old knees... the first few months of SS my knees sounded like popcorn popping. It lessened significantly over time, but they're still a bit noisy. Knee sleeves muffle the sound, too
OK, I'll just crack on then. Thanks everyone.
My knees have gotten crankier since I had to take a lifting hiatus. I'm hoping as I get back into it that'll stop
