Howdy fellow geezlings. I'm 58, 140 lbs., 10% body fat, and 5'7". After a year of doing P90X I decided it was time to concentrate on some strength and mass development.

I started SS three weeks ago. So far so good; I've been progressing each workout although on my last one with presses I could only do 4x5 4x5 5x5 so I guess I need to either eat more, rest more, micro-load or try harder. I'm doing the Novice program which subs pushups/pullups for cleans cause I'm an old pussy and I don't do anything that could be termed explosive these days (if you don't count the bathroom).

So far no injuries but the weight is still light (not to me) and my core and connecting tissues are probably pretty good from doing P90X so damned much. It actually seems like a luxury to only workout 3 days a week after doing 6 days a week for so long.

Hey, at your (our) age, explosive in the bathroom is as good as it gets. :-)

I'm doing cleans, and I'm 52. You might try them.

Welcome, there is a wide range of "geezer" around here, I, at 44 am a relatively young geezer. You will probably want to be able to microload the presses pretty early, though I was confused by your 4x5, 4x5, 5x5 reference. SS calls for warm ups to a work weight then 3 sets of 5 or 5x3 (I think is the proper way to write it)

Thanks for the welcome, guys. You're right Grizzlybuck; I meant to write that I did a set of 4, then a set of 4 then a set of 5.

Today I exceeded my bodyweight with squats: 3x5x145. Next goal is 1.5x bodyweight. My knees don't hurt so I must be going deep enough. Unfortunately the reality is that my depth is suspect.

    3 weeks in the bag.....

By the inch it's a cinch. At 58 you have already mastered patience or you wouldn't still be trying to get better. Keep at it. You'll find that the elderly here back each other up as they need it.

With arthritis in my knee, I've found that box squats with a fairly wide stance works best for me. I set the depth to about parallel. I can barely hit parallel doing a free
standing deep knee bend after extensive warm up. Good luck training ...
