Default Question about sets and reps

    I'm 5'10, 210 pounds.

Today was volume squat day. They were brutally hard. I am doing the Texas Method 5x5. I was able to knock out the first sets but had to take a good 10-15 minutes between them. After the second set I was so drained I had to take 20 minutes to recuperate and was only able to knock out 3 reps. After that failure, I decided to wait a solid half hour before trying by fourth set. 30 minutes later I knocked out only 4 reps. Then, deciding I was wasting way too much time, I knocked out 8 singles with 2-3 minutes rest in between, getting 25 good reps for the day.

My question is, is the important part of the training to knock out the 25 reps regardless how much time is between them, or is it more important to knock out all 25 reps within a certain amount of time? Does training with such drastic pauses degrade the work out as a whole? I know you said before that you should rest as often as you need, but is there a point where that no longer holds true? Thanks.
