I had thick callouses on my palms mainly from physical labour but probably also from deadlifts etc. Because of complaints from my girlfriend I used some gel from the chemist that removes the calouses - leaving my hands soft and smooth.

Besides using chalk how do I prevent getting them back whilst training?

Chalk is your best bet. Rip has a callous video, and I've seen others, which might address your concerns (I haven't watched the whole video of Rip's).

You're going to need some callouses because your next option is most likely going to be blisters if you whittle those things down too much.

Was your girlfriend really complaining about them, or just drawing attention to the fact that you have them? I couldn't imagine many women really wanting you to have hands just like theirs. She might just be shocked by them, but she'll probably adjust.

Calluses are an inevitable byproduct of using your hands to lift stuff. Watch Rips "managing calluses" video and search "Donny shankle hand care" on youtube.

Grip the bar correctly on all pulls, chinups, etc.

    Use chalk.

Scrape off the dead skin in the shower when it softens up, before it has a chance to build up.

Am I the only one who barely has any visible callouses? Unless you watch real close, my hand is as baby's bottom.

Mine are mostly from pre barbell training - using shovels, picks etc. The pumice stone is a temporary solution that actually in the long run causes more calluses. I used a gel from the chemist, my hands are soft now, hopefully using the grip Rip recommends, along with chalk will keep them that way.
