The empty bar is obviously the appropriate place to start however, you should be able to add weight to the bar the very first session. I assume you have the appropriate bumper plates?
Today was my first day trying power cleans. I have been doing rows up until today. I have also added 3x5 chins.
Watching a video on how to do them I quickly realized I do not know how to do them. So I practiced with a 45 bar.
Should I add my rows back until I am able to add weight? My plan is to practice 3x5 with the bar every night until I feel my coordination is where it need to be.
Any novice suggestions?
Yes. I have some bumper plates. I have no problem adding weight. At this light if weight I can just fake the movement, till it takes.
Often times you need a little weight on the bar to feel what's going on. The bumper plates also allow you to do an actual power clean vs a hang clean. The empty bar is just part of the teaching method as the goal should be to pull from the floor with weights as soon as the trainee gets the hang of the "jump and catch".
Thanks for the advise. I did 3x5 at 85 lb. Not much weight but it's a start. I think I'll add another 20 next round.
