    More gyms = more opportunities...

The announcement of Josh Wells, SSC moving over to Starting Strength Katy (here's the post) as Head Coach has created a vacancy at which I'm happy to announce will be filled by Tony Stein, SSC.

For those that don't know him, here goes. Tony has been a strength coach since 2017 and started apprenticing at Starting Strength Houston since we opened in August 2019. He was the only one of his group to stick through the difficulty of the apprentice pipeline, completing his SSC in January 2021. He replaced Chase Lindley as Coach when Chase moved to OKC and has since helped our members continue to get stronger as well as guide them through the various phases that accompanies training (PRs, injury rehab, weight loss, weight gain, meet prep, etc.). Prior to coaching full time, Tony brought years of experience in the restaurant and food industries as a baker, production manager, sous chef, pastry chef, sommelier and bartender where he developed and honed people and process management skills - both of which are necessary as a head coach.

Interestingly enough, Tony also brings a certain level of class and style to the gym as the only one who can really make correct wine/food pairings other than wHiTe FoR fIsH and ReD fOr BeEf. Also, he's got some interesting PR's, my favorite of which is the time he made a 1/2 lb oatmeal creme pie which I gluttonously ate in one sitting (here's the proof).

Starting Strength Houston held a Ladies Only Training Session and Q&A a few weeks ago.

It was a great experience for the ladies, although I believe most wanted the guys back The main purpose was to help build trust with the coaches and our female members. We've found that some women can often be reluctant to talk to a male coach about female-specific issues impacting their training. This then leads to delays in finding appropriate solutions, or worse, frustration and quitting in the long term. As Starting Strength Coaches, we make a difference in people's lives by helping to get them stronger. The professionalism required to have a straight-faced conversation about a potentially embarrassing topic isn't just mandatory, it's a basic expectation.

The team had a blast this weekend at the 1st annual Starting Strength Gyms Coaching Conference. It was great to get together with everyone, meet the other gyms and hang out with the franchise team. Definitely a lot of great people to learn from!
