Yeah, I'm probably going for 185 next week, but not sure. Suit practice will have to take priority now. Meet is in less than 3 weeks. I should have started earlier, but kind of forgot. I hate suited and shirted practice.

My deadlift max? Hmm, 225 is a safe opener any time and I can pull 230 whenever I want to do a grinder. Above that gets a little trickier. My old master's record, 235, got pushed aside when all the records were cleared last year (we joined the Icelandic Sports Commission, started drug testing and whatnot), so I will probably go for that on my 2nd attempt. If I make that, I want 240 for an all-time best.

I have some competition in my weight class, 100, but essentially none in the 100 M1. Not willing to show up at a tested meet anyway.

OK, I didn't explain the situation with the suits well enough.

I have never gotten anything out of my 44 suit in the deadlift, that's why my coach wanted me to try his 42. In the event, it's probably not actually tighter than the 44, despite the smaller number. It actually feels looser. I suspect it may be because my coach used it a lot weighing close to 110kg and stretched it out. I had a lot of trouble getting down to the bar in my 44 and also putting the bar down after the lift. Both were easier in the 42. Also, I have a lot more bruising in mine afterwards ;-)

I will probably do more testing though. It just may require a little technique, tightening against the suit to get the proper rebound effect.
I didn't expect that you'd be thinking about my measly bench efforts. The suit explanation makes lots of sense. 1st time I've heard of someone having trouble putting the bar down due to a suit. Now that I think about it, it seems like more people would experience that in some suits.

I'm going to Amsterdam for a long weekend (Thursday-Sunday), so the likely scenario is that I deadlift Wednesday and skip bench this week to heal up.
Sweet! Congrats on the raw PR! In case I don't post here before you leave, enjoy your trip and come back ready to peak for that meet.

Thank you Kaisheem. You can see me having trouble getting down to the bar at 2:40 in this video, and putting the bar down at 3:00. That was 235kg (518 lbs), which I've lifted before raw.

Nice lifting Helgi.....I think learning Icelandic would automatically add a couple hundred pounds to my total.

Thank you Big. I doubt it. There are plenty of weaklings up here.

Lemme guess, "weakling" is an ancient Icelandic word for the guys with 200 < deadlift < 235?

Haha. No, most gyms here are just like people describe in the gym thread. Silly shit in Smith machines, anorexic girls doing 3000 reps of "nod while lying on your back with knees up", bros doing bench'n'bis, quarter squats with 40 kilos while imitating Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally, two-man bench'n'row etc. They even imitate Ronnie Coleman and go "Light weight, light weight" and "Yip yip" in a squeaky voice when they lift.

I mostly work out in such a gym since the small powerlifting gym I went to went bankrupt (not the first one) and I guess I'm pretty close to being top dog in it. I go there because it's convenient, well-equipped and my coach is a PT there. We've got a small clique from the PL club who work out there, but I'm probably 2nd-4th strongest in the group. There are a few other people I know less who are pretty strong, especially in the bench.

Sure, Iceland does have a large powerlifting community for its population though and I know a fair proportion of them, but since the little hardcore gyms rarely last more than a year, they're spread fairly widely in the commercial chain gyms.

    Wednesday Nov 3rd 2010 - Deadlift Day

    Squat

    45kg (100 lbs) x 10
    70kg (154 lbs) x 5
    80kg (176 lbs) x 5
    90kg (198 lbs) x 5

    Power Clean

    70kg (154 lbs) x 3
    80kg (176 lbs) x 3

    Bench Press

    70kg (154 lbs) x 5,5

It took forever to warm up today. It was a cold windy day and my office was freezing.

    Deadlift

    120kg (265 lbs) x 3
    150kg (331 lbs) x 3
    170kg (375 lbs) x 1
    200kg (441 lbs) x 1
    230kg (507 lbs) x 1
    200kg (441 lbs) x 3,3

230 was slow and hard today, but probably the heaviest I've pulled in the gym for 2-3 years. I'm good to open with 225 on the 21st. This will be my last deadlifting day before the meet. After the meet, I'm experimenting with sumo.

    Monday Nov 8th 2010 - Squat Day

    Squat

    20kg (44 lbs) x 10
    70kg (154 lbs) x 5
    100kg (220 lbs) x 5
    120kg (265 lbs) x 3
    140kg (309 lbs) x 1
    160kg (353 lbs) x 1
    170kg (375 lbs) x 1
    185kg (408 lbs) x 1 (PR!)

185 was, if anything, a little easier than 182.5 last week. That's a 10kg improvement in 3 weeks, but of course, my squat 1RM was overdue for a reality check. Since I'm still nursing a pulled right pec or shoulder, that's all for today except for a little light rotator-cuff work. I felt a little guilty stopping and going to the hot pots, but I suppose recovery is part of training.

    starting strength coach development program
Wednesday Nov 10th 2010 - Meet Prep Day

Suited Squat (Titan Centurion NXG size 44)

    20kg (44 lbs) x 10
    70kg (154 lbs) x 5
    120kg (265 lbs) x 3
    150kg (331 lbs) x 1
    180kg (397 lbs) x 1
    190kg (419 lbs) x 1

190 should be a safe opener.

    Bench Press

    50kg (110 lbs) x 8
    70kg (154 lbs) x 5
    100kg (220 lbs) x 3
    120kg (265 lbs) x 1

Suited Bench Press (Titan F6 size 46)

    130kg (287 lbs) x 1
    135kg (298 lbs) x 1
    140kg (309 lbs) x 1
    142.5kg (314 lbs) x 1 (PR! and easy too)

135 is a safe opener. 140 probably as well. I've added 7.5kg to my raw bench since 140 was my best suited bench.

I almost went for 145 which I think is pretty certain, but decided to err on the side of caution. I can still feel my right pec and I've already got a PR. Better safe than sorry.
